(Update: The Bajaj Freedom 125 has been launched at Rs 95,000 (ex-showroom). Check out the details here.)
The Bajaj Freedom 125 will be launched tomorrow, on July 5, 2024. It will be India’s and also the world’s first CNG bike on sale after the launch.
Bajaj Auto filed a trademark for the ‘Bajaj Freedom’ name earlier this year. We know that Bajaj always uses a displacement suffix after its bike names and because the upcoming bike will have a 125cc engine, it will be called the Bajaj Freedom 125.
The Freedom 125 could be available in a regular variant and also a more rugged version as well. Both bikes get simple and retro commuter-ish styling with an LED headlight, a triangular side panel, a single-piece grab rail and a long, flat single-piece seat. Also, a braced handlebar, alloy wheels and an upright riding posture with mid-set footpegs have been spotted in the numerous spy shots of the bike so far. The rugged variant gets knuckle guards, a raised handlebar, fork sleeves, sump guard, a stubby upswept exhaust and a rear tyre hugger. The exhaust on the regular version looks more simple, and the bike also gets a flyscreen. At least one variant of the bike will have tank shrouds with a brushed aluminium finish and the Bajaj Freedom 125 logo, and heat shield for the exhaust pipe, all of which have been spotted in a recent teaser.
The CNG cylinder of the Bajaj Freedom 125 will be placed horizontally under the seat, along its length. It will also get a small, auxiliary petrol tank, to be used when the bike starts running out of CNG. The filler nozzles for both tanks will be different as the CNG requires a pressurised storage setup and a very different mechanism to refill, as compared to petrol. The bike will be powered by a 125cc engine and since CNG is not as power dense as petrol, the engine performance will be similar to that of a 110cc commuter bike. It is expected to have great mileage, resulting in considerably lower running costs than a petrol-powered bike.
The Freedom 125’s suspension setup consists of a telescopic fork and a monoshock, while braking duties are taken care of by drum brakes at both ends. Bajaj Auto could also provide an optional front disc brake as one of the spied bikes was equipped with one.. In terms of features, it is expected to get a digital instrument console with tell-tale lights including low CNG level alert and neutral gear position indicator displayed in a horizontal manner above it.
As the Bajaj Freedom 125 will be mostly targeted towards the masses who prefer bikes with lower running costs and Bajaj Auto is known for pricing its bike very competitively at launch. Which is why we think that the upcoming bike will be priced around the Rs 80,000 (ex-showroom) mark. It won’t have any direct rivals but will face competition from other 110cc petrol-powered bikes with good mileage like the Hero Splendor Plus, TVS Radeon, Honda Shine 100, and Bajaj Platina 110.
