Quick News Highlights:
- The Bajaj CNG bike’s name has been revealed and it’ll be called the Bajaj Freedom 125
- Also, Bajaj Auto has shared a new teaser of the upcoming CNG bike
- It has revealed new details about the bike’s design
The Bajaj CNG bike’s name has been revealed and it will be called the ‘Bajaj Freedom 125’. Bajaj Auto filed a trademark for the name earlier this year and it says “two wheelers, specifically electric two wheelers and two wheelers operating on compressed natural gas”. In the trademark filing, ‘125’ is not mentioned but Bajaj always uses a displacement suffix after their bike names. And since we know that this CNG bike will have a 125cc engine, it will be called Bajaj Freedom 125.
Also, the manufacturer has teased the bike again before its launch tomorrow.
In the latest teaser, a couple of tell-tale lights have been revealed like the low CNG fuel level alertand the neutral gear position indicator. We think these and other tell-tale lights will be arranged in a horizontal manner with a digital instrument console below them. The other design details spotted are tank shrouds with brushed aluminium finish, exhaust pipe heat shield, a triangular-shaped side panel, and a silhouette of the headlight design.
The headlight has two triangular-shaped DRLS in the centre and it is likely to get an LED lighting unit in the middle. The white lines seen on the headlight unit could be a reflection of the studio setup used for the shoot of the bike, and not design features of the headlight.
Since the Bajaj Freedom 125 will be marketed towards budget-conscious buyers and will mainly compete against other 110cc commuter bikes, it is expected to be priced around the Rs 80,000 (ex-showroom) mark. The bike will be launched on July 5, 2024.
From the numerous spy shots we have seen till now, the bike is likely to be available in two variants: a roadsterand a more rugged version. Overall, both variants get a simple design with an LED headlight and bulb indicators. They also get a braced handlebar, alloy wheels, a single-piece alloy grab rail, and a long, flat single-piece seat. The riding posture looks quite upright and comfortable with mid-set footpegs.
Additionally, the rugged variant gets knuckle guards, a rear tyre hugger, a raised handlebar, fork sleeves, stubby upswept exhaust, and a sump guard. Differentiating elements on the roadster include a flyscreen and a simpler-looking exhaust. In terms of features, as mentioned above, the bike is likely to get a digital instrument console. Also, there is a dedicated switch on the left switchgear to toggle between the CNG and petrol tanks, the details of which are mentioned below. The switchgear could also get a circular button, which will function as a high-low beam switch.
The Bajaj Freedom 125 will have a CNG cylinder placed underneath the long, flat seat. It will also have an auxiliary petrol tank for emergencies like when the bike runs out of CNG. Both tanks will get different filler nozzles since the mechanisms for both the CNG cylinder and the petrol tank are very different.
Powering the bike will be a sloper-like engine, with the capacity expected to be about 125cc. Since CNG is not as power dense as petrol, the bike’s performance is expected to be similar to that of a 110cc commuter bike. It will be geared more towards producing great mileage outputs. Since the cost per kg for CNG is much cheaper than the cost per litre for petrol, the running costs of the CNG bike will likely be quite low as well.
The suspension setup of the upcoming CNG bike consists of a telescopic fork and a monoshock. Braking duties are taken care of by drum brakes at both ends. It could also get a front disc brake as optional.
The Freedom 125 won’t have a direct rival as it’ll be the only CNG bike on sale in India. However, it’ll compete against other 110cc commuter bikes like the Hero Splendor Plus, TVS Radeon, Honda Shine 100, and Bajaj Platina 110.
