At a recent dealer event, away from the eyes of the media, Yamaha India showcased the R7, MT-07 and MT-09. This confirms the return of Yamaha's big bikes India after a very long hiatus. Yes the mighty YZF-R1 isn't joining the clan, but the current portfolio is pretty exciting on its own.
Last year, top brass from Yamaha India had confirmed that they were looking to bring the R7 and MT-09 to India, which stirred up some excitement with the fans of the brand. They did mention the first run will be a limited batch followed by a full launch a short while after. What did come as a surprise however, was seeing the R3 make a comeback and be joined by the MT-03.
This portfolio should allow Yamaha to compete with other premium middle-weight motorcycles such as Triumph Trident 660, Honda CB650R, CBR650R, Kawasaki Z650 and Ninja 650, and the upcoming Triumph Street Triple R and RS. The R7 alone should act as a wonderful beginner big bike for supersport and track riding enthusiasts, and should be versatile enough for commutes as well. For more details on the R7 and MT-07, check out this story.
Given that this was a dealer event, it cements the fact that Yamaha India is on track with the launch of these bikes. In fact, we can see these bikes arrive (our best estimate) sometime between June-July '23. The Yamaha MT-07 could be priced at Rs 8 lakh, whereas its faired sibling, the R7 could be pegged at around Rs 9 lakh. The more powerful MT-09 could be priced at Rs 13 lakh, and if Yamaha decides to bring the more premium SP variant (as it showed the version at one of its brand presentations in August last year), it could command a price tag of around Rs 16 lakh (all ex-showroom).
