Offering six airbags as standard has become a trend for carmakers with their new products. Six airbags provide enhanced safety with side impact coverage, also resulting in better crash test results. However, there are still several cars sold in India that do not come equipped with six airbags, even as anoption in their respective top-spec variants. In this report, we present models from all segments sold on our shores that lack six airbags. Check them out.
Maruti's entry-level hatchback, the Alto K10, comes equipped with dual front airbags as standard. Recently, its safety department was updated with the inclusion of ESP (Electronic Stability Program) as standard across all variants. Other safety features in the Alto K10 include ABS with EBD, impact-sensing door unlock, speed-sensing door lock, and reverse parking sensors. Priced between Rs 4 lakh and Rs 5.96 lakh (ex-showroom), the Alto K10 is offered across four broad trims.
Next-up is the Maruti Suzuki Celerio which is sold with only dual front airbags as standard. Other standard safety features include ABS with EBD, electronic stability program, and reverse parking sensors, while higher-spec variants also get hill hold assist, a rear wiper with washer, and a rear defogger. The Celerio is powered by a 67 PS/89 Nm 1-litre petrol engine, which can also be configured with a factory-fitted CNG kit.
Along with the Alto K10, Maruti has also updated the S-Presso’s standard safety features with electronic stability program. It comes equipped with dual front airbags as standard, along with ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors, and front seat-belt pretensioners with force limiters. The S-Presso is powered by the same 67 PS/89 Nm 1-litre petrol engine, which, when configured with a factory-fitted CNG kit, reduces power output to 57 PS/82 Nm. Prices for the S-Presso start at Rs 4.26 lakh (ex-showroom) and go up to Rs 6.11 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Renault Kwid is the next hatch on this list that is equipped only with dual front airbags. However, its standard safety tech includes a tyre pressure monitoring system, along with ABS, EBD, electronic stability program, and reverse parking sensors. The Kwid is powered by a 1-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 68 PS and 91 Nm, paired with either a 5-speed manual or AMT.
Kwid's sub-4m SUV counterpart, the Renault Kiger, is also offered only with dual front airbags as standard. However, starting from the RXT variant, you get two additional side airbags in the front-row, bringing the total to four airbags. Other standard safety features include hill start assist, a tyre pressure monitoring system, a traction control system, and ABS with EBD. The Kiger is offered with two 1-litre petrol powertrain options: a naturally aspirated unit that produces 72 PS and 96 Nm, and a turbocharged unit delivering 100 PS and up to 160 Nm.
The Tata Punch is the only micro-SUV on this list that does not come with six airbags, equipped with only dual front airbags. In contrast, the Punch EV gets six airbags as standard across all its variants. The Punch’s standard safety features include ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and reverse parking sensors, while higher-spec variants also offer automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. That being said, despite the lesser number of airbags, the Punch still aced the Global NCAP crash safety test with a full five star rating.
One of Maruti's best-selling hatchbacks, the Wagon R, is equipped with only two airbags for front-row passengers. As standard, it comes with electronic stability program, rear parking sensors, central locking, and ABS with EBD. It is available with two engine options: a 67 PS/89 Nm 1-litre petrol engine and a 90 PS/113 Nm 1.2-litre petrol engine. The former can also be configured with a factory-fitted CNG kit.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire comes equipped with dual front airbags. However, with the 2024 new-generation update, we expect Maruti to offer six airbags as standard with the Dzire. The current model features hill start assist for automatic transmission variants, while its standard safety tech includes ABS with EBD, electronic stability program, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and reverse parking sensors. It is available only with a 90 PS/113 Nm 1.2-litre petrol engine, paired with 5-speed manual and automatic transmission options., and can also be configured with a factory-fitted CNG kit.
Renault's sub-4m MPV, the Triber, comes with dual front airbags as standard. However, if you choose the top-spec RXZ variant, you get two additional side airbags for the front row. Standard features include a tyre pressure monitoring system, hill start assist, reverse parking sensors, and ABS with EBD. The powertrain option is limited to a 72 PS/96 Nm 1-litre petrol engine, paired with 5-speed manual and automatic transmission choices.
The final Maruti in this report is the Ertiga, which comes with four airbags in its top-spec ZXi+ variant but gets only dual front airbags as standard. Features such as hill hold assist, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors and ISOFIX child seat mounts are offered as standard. It is powered by a 103 PS/ 137 Nm 1.5-litre petrol engine, offered with 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission.
Mahindra's rugged-looking SUV, the Scorpio Classic, comes with dual front airbags as standard. It is a three-row, ladder-on-frame SUV, and equipping it with at least four airbags in the top-spec variant would have been ideal. Additionally, it lacks a reverse parking camera and only includes other standard safety features. For better safety features, you might consider the mid-spec Scorpio N as well. The Scorpio Classic is offered with a 132 PS/300 Nm 2.2-litre diesel engine, paired only with a 6-speed manual transmission.
Another Mahindra SUV that comes equipped only with dual front airbags is the 3-door Thar. Its larger sibling, the Thar Roxx, features six airbags as standard and also includes ADAS in the top-spec variant. In addition to standard safety features, the Thar offers hill hold and hill descent control, ISOFIX child seat mounts, roll cage and 3-point seat belts for all passengers. But once again, despite a lower airbag count, the Thar still has a commendable four star safety rating from Global NCAP.
These are the models that do not come equipped with six airbags in the Indian market. Share your thoughts in the comments below about which model you expected to have six airbags, at least in higher-spec variants.
