Soon after revealing the exterior design, Citroen has unveiled the Basalt coupe SUV in full for India. Bookings for the SUV are already underway at select dealerships ahead of its expected launch in the next few days. It shares similarities with the C3 and C3 Aircross, but gets unique styling touches and additional features, as it’ll sit in the highly competitive segment with stalwarts like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Here is a closer look at the newly unveiled Basalt SUV:
Design-wise the production-spec version of the Basalt looks nearly identical to the concept model showcased earlier. Upfront, the design looks similar and familiar to the C3 and C3 Aircross models. For starters. It sports a split headlight setup with LED projectors and DRLs that flanks the grille with many square elements.
In profile, the main highlight is the sloping roofline, which merges seamlessly with the tailgate. It sits on dual-tone alloy wheels and the taillights introduce themselves from the side itself.
The Basalt is avaialble in 5 monotone colours and 2 dual tone colours : Polar White, Steel Grey, Platinum Grey, Cosmo Blue, Garnet Red, Polar White with Perla Nera Black roof and Garnet Red with Perla Nera Black roof.
Coming to the rear, there’s no roof mounted spoiler, but the boot lip does protrude out and there’s also a shark fin antenna on the roof above. It features wraparound LED tail lamps and there is a silver skid plate to finish the look.
The dashboard layout remains identical to the C3 and C3 Aircross, but gets a different colour theme and some extra features such as six airbags, LED headlights, and automatic control to set it apart. A segment-first feature that is available on the Basalt, is the option to move the base of the rear seats by 87 mm, for better underthigh support. The remaining features include, a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charger, power windows, push button start, and steering mounted audio controls.
In terms of safety, it gets six airbags, electronic stability control, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors with camera.
Under the hood, the Basalt gets a 110 PS 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, that is offered with both six-speed manual and optional six-speed torque converter automatic transmission options. It also gets a 82 PS 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, which is available with a 5-speed manual only. In terms of fuel efficiency, the NA petrol engine returns 18kmpl, while the turbo-petrol engine returns 19.5 kmpl with the manual and 18.7 kmpl with the automatic transmission.
The Citroen Basalt is expected to be priced from around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). It will lock horns with the upcoming Tata Curvv. It will also be an alternative to compact SUVs such as the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq, and VW Taigun.
