Gearheads and history buffs, dust off those dream garage lists because the Indian government has just made your classic car fantasies a whole lot more achievable! In a major win for automotive nostalgia, India has officially relaxed import rules, allowing vehicles manufactured up to 1975 to enter through the ports. Previously, only pre-1950 models were eligible, but with this new directive, the world of classic cars is about to get a lot more exciting on Indian roads.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, on February 7, 2025, gave the green signal for importing classic cars aged 50 years or older. This means the eligibility criteria will keep rolling forward every year, so by 2026, cars from 1976 will also qualify, and so on.
Best of all, no special import license is needed, making the process much simpler for enthusiasts looking to bring home an old-school masterpiece. However, there’s a catch. These imports must be strictly for personal use. Reselling them within India is a no-go under this policy.
India’s classic car scene has always had its fair share of passionate collectors and restorers, but stringent import laws kept many dream machines out of reach. With this revised rule, expect to see more legendary cars rolling onto Indian streets.
Think Ford Mustang Fastback or even a Porsche 911 (930 Turbo), and some stunning JDM legends from the ‘60s and ‘70s. The possibilities are endless!
Until now, enthusiasts had to rummage through the limited domestic market or resort to complex loopholes to get their hands on vintage icons. Now, direct imports from renowned auction houses, international dealerships, and private collectors have become viable options.
With a fresh influx of vintage cars, India’s restoration industry will also get a massive boost. Workshops specializing in engine rebuilds, upholstery restoration, and classic car detailing will see growing demand, creating new business opportunities for skilled craftsmen.
the automobile community
More classics mean bigger and better vintage car events! Auto shows, vintage rallies, and Sunday morning drives will likely see an increase in participation, bringing together communities of like-minded enthusiasts to celebrate automotive history. Can’t wait to see the scenes at the Horniman Circle Garden at Colaba.
While importing a classic has become easier, owners still have to ensure their vehicles comply with: The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 & The Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
This primarily concerns roadworthiness and emissions, though older vehicles may get exemptions given their historic value.
Also, the import duties are expected to be approximately 250 percent of the traded value, which is indeed a significant amount (because, well, India). The ability to own a piece of motoring history is often priceless for true collectors.
With this progressive policy, we might see further relaxations in the future. Maybe down the road, even younger modern classics could be included, opening the doors for gems from the ‘80s and ‘90s to enter legally. (Yes, JDM fans, that means your beloved Skyline GT-Rs, Toyota Supras, and Honda NSXs could one day roam freely!)
It’s a good time to be a classic car enthusiast in India. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or someone who’s been waiting to bring home their dream classic, this new rule is sure to ease things out as compared to before. If you ask the author, he would really like to import an Aston Martin DB5, the BMT 216A spec, i.e. the 007 spec! (Cue: Bond theme...)
We really cannot wait for some beautiful vintage beauties to roll onto the streets of India. (Cue: Cheri Cheri Lady fades in…)
