To rekindle its rivalry with the Audi A4, Volvo S60, and BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine.
As we head closer to the fifth-generation (W206) Mercedes-Benz C-Class’ India launch on May 10, things are beginning to take shape. The carmaker has announced that production of the sedan has commenced with the first unit rolling out of its production plant in Chakan, near Pune. If you’re an existing Mercedes customer, you can exclusively book it in advance till April 30, after which other buyers can secure their allocation.
Unveiled globally early last year, the fifth-generation C-Class retains its predecessor’s silhouette and gets an evolutionary design update. This includes a sharper set of headlights with LED DRLs, a new grille with a three-pointed star mesh, new two-piece tail lamps at the rear, as well as cleaner lines and curves overall. The big change is that it has experienced a growth spurt, being longer and slightly wider than its predecessor.
While the C-Class might seem reminiscent of the model it replaces on the outside, things are different inside. It’s now got a cleaner, more minimalistic design that is inspired by the new S-Class. Key features include a 10.25-inch driver display and a 9.5-inch infotainment touchscreen (standard), a Burmester audio system, and a head-up display.
Higher-spec variants should also get the option of a larger 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 11.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Rear seat passengers will benefit from memory function seats and 20mm more legroom when compared with the previous W205 C-Class.
Under the hood, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the new C-Class will get a petrol (C 200) as well as two diesel (C 220d and C 300d) powertrain options. These mills also get assistance from a 48-volt mild-hybrid system as standard and are paired with a 20PS/200Nm electric motor for added performance and improved efficiency.
