It pays homage to the flagship sedan from 1986, but infuses a bit of modern-day flair

Seems like Hyundai is steeped in nostalgia in 2021. After reviving the Pony as an electric concept in April, the carmaker has done it again, this time, for the 1986 Grandeur sedan. This e-concept celebrates 35 years of the flagship sedan by giving it the right mix of retro and modernity.

Here are five things you want to know about the Grandeur electric concept:

Old But Gold

Why fix something that was never broken? Hyundai has retained the exterior design from the 80s -- a tall-boy stance, boxy proportions, and closed-off wheels.

Light It Up Right!

While the silhouette hasn't changed, the carmaker has taken a leaf out of the IONIQ 5's book, giving the headlights and taillights a pixelated design. The best part? It doesn't look out of place in the Grandeur at all; if anything, it enhances the appeal.

The big changes are actually inside, where there's a sensible blend of old and new ideas. The retro element is the single-spoke steering wheel and a mechanical gear lever, and the 'new' is the overhead interior lighting updated with an infinity mirror, lending the concept a futuristic look. The bronze-colour lighting is in line with the vintage theme.

Digital Screens

The most contemporary element in the cabin is the wide display constituting the driver's display and infotainment system. There's also a vertical screen in the centre console that has the infotainment controls.

Electric Power

The original 1986 Hyundai Grandeur was actually a rebadged Mitsubishi Debonair produced by the carmaker, and it was powered by a 2-litre petrol engine. The concept gets an electric powertrain, although the specifics have yet to be revealed.
