Inspired, imitation, doppelganger, based-on, they all eventually mean the same thing, not the OG! But each word determines the concentration of the original product in the new one. This Chinese Aerox 155 lookalike, its maker says, is “based on” the Yamaha, but made nicer too. Let’s have a look at that claim:
Buying a maxi-scooter is not like buying first-copy football jerseys. Even if you don’t tell anyone, sooner rather than later they will find out. Yes, the silhouette of the original and its Chinese imitation is the same, and maybe, at first glance, you’ll even pass it off for an Aerox, but the NMax155’s (yep, it is also called the NMax!) tacky alloy wheels will leak the secret.
The NMax gets a 149.6cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine, whereas the Aerox 155 gets a 155cc, liquid-cooled single pot. The NMax155 makes 10.6PS and 11Nm, while the Aerox makes 15PS and 13.9Nm. The Yamaha gets a modern fuel injection system, and while the lookalike runs a carburetor.
Ok, the NMax155 takes the edge with its 108kg (kerb weight) making the Aerox feel a little chubby at 126kg (kerb weight), while keeping everything else mostly the same. They have the same suspension setup, telescopic front and twin shocks at the rear, the same size (14-inch) rims, but the Aerox has wider tyres. Even the fuel tanks on both scooters are almost the same in terms of capacity, but it must be revealed that the Aerox can hold an additional half a litre of petrol.
So far Geely has not managed to convince us that the NMax155 is better than the Aerox 155, but there’s one more trick up its sleeve. While the Aerox 155 costs Rs 1,38,800 (ex-showroom Delhi), the NMax 155 costs USD 590 (roughly Rs 46,609 ex-showroom). Which makes it as affordable as the TVS XL100!
