We usually equate performance with premium price tags. However, the Indian two-wheeler market has matured enough to have reached a stage where bikes are not only affordable, but also offer more thrills per rupee. Here’s a list of the top 5 fastest bikes in India that cost less than Rs 2 lakh:
At Rs 1,85,000 (ex-showroom Delhi), the new Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z has absolutely nailed the ‘value-for-money’ proposition. It’s the cheapest 400cc bike in India, with 40PS and 35Nm from the 373cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. It's the same one from the Bajaj Dominar 400, which in turn is based on the second-gen KTM Duke 390’s engine.

The Yamaha R15 has been one of the best performance bikes in India, ever since it was first launched. Through all its four iterations it has evolved and become better. At Rs 1,96,500 (ex-showroom), the R15 M variant is one of the most expensive bikes in the 150-160cc segment. But it is quite feature packed, with a quickshifter, traction control, and smartphone connectivity.

R15 Mileage Real World |

Its 18.4PS, 14.2Nm, 155cc liquid-cooled engine helps it accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 12.20 seconds, which isn’t bad for a bike of its capacity. You might need to get used to the ergonomics but it's an excellent bike to learn the nuances of riding. The handling is brilliant, performance is peppy, and you can read more here.
In its second iteration, the Yamaha MT-15 is even better than its predecessor with a inverted fork and a cast aluminium swingarm. The MT-15 is priced from Rs 1,68,000 to Rs 1,73,500 (ex-showroom, Delhi), with the top-end variants getting basic smartphone connectivity, LED indicators, and flashier colours.

MT 15 Mileage Real World |

The MT-15 gets the same 155cc engine as the Yamaha R15, and makes 18.4PS and 14.2Nm. However, even with the lack of the aerodynamic bodywork, the MT-15 accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in 12.23 seconds, which is almost at par with the R15. In our roadtest of the MT-15, it returned an impressive mileage of 56.87kmpl in the city. All in all, it’s a great bike that’s fun for commutes and occasional weekend rides.
The New Hero Karizma is quite an icon in the Indian motorcycling scene. So obviously when the new Hero Karizma XMR was launched, it had all eyes on it. And it doesn’t look half bad either. It costs Rs 1,79,900 (ex-showroom, Delhi) and comes with a 210cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine that makes 25.5PS and 20.4Nm, mated to a 6-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch. That’s enough to help the XMR accelerate to 100kmph from a standstill in 11.06 seconds, which makes it the second quickest bike in this list.
Karizma XMR Price |
Rs 1,79,900 |
Karizma XMR Engine |

Karizma XMR Power |
25.5PS at 9250rpm |

Karizma XMR Mileage Real World |
41.38kmpl in the city, 36.7kmpl on the highway |
While the engine capacity has gone slightly down over the original Karizma, its performance has definitely gone up thanks to liquid-cooling. Its features list is pretty barebones, with a digital LCD cluster with turn-by-turn navigation, along with an adjustable windscreen and LED lighting. But it more than makes up for it with the way it performs in the real world, as we found out in our review.
