Hero MotoCorp has recently launched the latest iteration of the Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0. Along with new features, the price of the commuter bike has also increased. So, how does it fare against its rivals, the Honda Shine 100, Bajaj Platina 100 and the Hero Passion Plus, on paper?

The Honda Shine 100 gets the biggest bore size and the shortest stroke length (47 x 57.049mm) which, in theory, could be one of the factors that the Shine 100 produces the least output despite having a bigger capacity engine compared to the Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0 and the Hero Passion Plus. Whereas, the Shine 100 and the Bajaj Platina 100 should have the most tractable motor in this comparison as they produce their peak torque output at a lower part of the rpm range compared to the other two bikes.
Since these are all commuter bikes, mileage output is of paramount importance. All but except for the Platina 100 get an idle start-stop system, which switches off the engine when it idles for more than a set period of time. Hero calls it i3S technology while Honda calls it eSP technology. These features are designed to save fuel and increase mileage output. So, the three bikes should ideally offer better mileage performance than the Shine 100.

The Shine 100 gets a diamond type frame which is reflected by the bike’s lightest kerb weight of 98kg in this comparison. This should make the bike easier to manoeuvre in tight city traffic conditions. The thinner tyre sizes should also help in easily flicking the bike from one direction to another. On the other hand, the comparatively bigger tyre and wheel sizes should make the Splendor Plus Xtec and the Passion Plus more stable and planted at higher speeds.

The Platina 100 has the longest wheelbase and the highest kerb weight, which should compensate for the lesser stability due to the thinner tyre setup compared to the Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0 and the Passion Plus. While it gets the highest seat height which shorter riders might find a bit inaccessible, its 200mm ground clearance is the highest in this comparison, which should help the bike handle bad roads better than the rest. The bigger fuel tank capacities of the Platina 100 and the Passion Plus should result in lesser fuel stops during your regular commutes.

Among all these bikes, the Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0 is the clear winner in this segment as it gets a full-LCD instrument console with Bluetooth connectivity for call & SMS alerts and phone battery level status. The console shows real-time mileage indicator, side-stand indicator, speedometer, odometer, trip meter and low fuel indicator readouts.
The Passion Plus comes in second as it gets a semi-digital console with analogue unit that shows the speedometer reading while the LCD screen shows odometer, fuel gauge and trip meter readouts.

The Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0 has the most powerful motor, gets good handling dynamics and the most extensive features list in this comparison. And it has been known to produce one of the highest mileage outputs over the years. One negative aspect is that it is the costliest bike by a margin. So, if you want all the modern features and a very reliable bike (evident by the fact the Splendor is the highest selling bike in the country), then the Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0 is a good choice for you. If you don’t care much about Bluetooth connectivity, and like the more vibrant paint job and the graphics on the Passion Plus, then you should go for that.
But, if you don’t care much about fancy features at all and just want a frugal commuter bike that will take care of your daily riding needs, then the Shine 100 and Platina 100 are the one for you and offer great value for money because of their very affordable price tags.
