The enthusiasts among us might already know that the Citroen 2CV is one of the most iconic vehicles to come out of France. Now, the vintage classic will meet other classic characters that are quintessentially French – Asterix and Obelix, the comic book characters created by Rene Goscinni and Albert Uderzo.
For those who don’t know, Asterix comics are based in the year 50BC, when the Roman Empire had control over pretty much the entirety of France as we know it today. With a good 2,000 years separating the movie’s timeline from the 2CV’s conception, Citroen had to stick with the chariot theme instead of a full-blown car.
The resulting 2CV chariot is a classic Antiquity masterpiece with an oak body frame and Lutece leather – Lutetia, where Paris currently stands, probably produced high quality leather back in the day. Importantly, the 2CV chariot features Citroen’s new oval logo, and even the carmaker’s present-day vision of eco-consciousness is reflected in the recycled shield wheels.
Lastly, the 2CV chariot’s French patriotism also shows up in its bodywork made from Gaul steel – Gaul, Asterix and Obelix’s home, later became the French kingdom.
Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom is the first Asterix movie not based on any of the original comic albums by Goscinny and Uderzo. We can’t wait for it to come out on February 1, 2023, when it’ll premiere on Netflix for the UK audience initially. That’s not all. Citroen also provided the production teams with their electrified vehicles such as three ë-C4 models, three new C5 Aircross PHEV’s, two ë-SpaceTourers, an ë-Jumpy (ë-Dispatch) and an Ami EV.
Did you ever read or watch Asterix and Obelix as a kid? Let us know in the comments.
