Safety is a topic that’s doing rounds in conversations a lot more than it used to before. And understandably so, considering the pace that technology is evolving at. One such new technology, which helps improve the safety quotient is Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, also known as ADAS. Now, this high-tech feature was mostly reserved for luxury vehicles, but Hyundai is one of those brands that has been democratising this feature in mass market vehicles with the Venue, Verna and Creta being the epitome of that statement.
In this story, we take a look at the feature set and the application of the Creta’s ADAS suite, which is a Level-2 system that makes use of both a camera and radar to keep occupants safe.
As the name suggests, this feature alarms the driver and takes preventive action if needed in the case of a forward collision.
So if there’s a vehicle or a pedestrian or even a cyclist that jumps in front of the vehicle suddenly, the system will first notify the driver with an audio aid. If the driver fails to respond, the system will then intervene by applying the brakes to avoid the collision.
Just line the Forward Collision Warning & Assist, Blind Spot Collision Warning & Assist feature monitors and prevents collisions that could happen from a vehicle being in your blind spot.
This applies on both the sides of a vehicle. The system gives an alert on the ORVM, to notify the presence of a vehicle in the blindspot. If the driver still continues to drift away unknowingly or change the lane, the system takes control to put the car back in its original position/lane.
The function of this feature is well explained in the name itself. The Lane Keep Assist helps the driver keep the car in the original lane.
So if the car starts to drift wide into another lane without turning on the indicators, the system will steer the car back into its original position.
Also known as adaptive cruise control, this feature is an extension of the standard cruise control we’re all familiar with.
In this, the vehicle not just maintains the set speed, but also maintains a set distance with respect to the car ahead. So if the leading vehicle slows down, so will your vehicle, and if it accelerates, so will your vehicle whilst maintaining the pre-set gap. It’s a very convenient feature to have on those long expressway drives.
Checking your phone at a red light is a natural instinct in the hustling urban jungle.
But sometimes, one gets a little too indulged in their gadget, not realising that the vehicle in front has moved on. This function prompts the driver to get his attention back on the road and get back to his chauffeur duties. An underrated feature, this.
Backing up a car into traffic, that too in a crowded space can be intimidating with traffic and pedestrians crossing from both the sides.
So while reversing, this feature acts as a much needed extra set of eyes and alerts you if there is some rear cross traffic coming towards you. If you’re late to react, it’ll also intervene and brake to avoid the collision.
A surround view monitor is basically a 360-degree camera, which provides you the complete look of the vehicle’s exterior. This makes it easier to park and maneuver the vehicle in tight spaces. On the other hand, the blind view monitor makes use of one of the surround view monitor’s cameras on the ORVM to pop a feed of whichever side you’re indicating on.
You get the feed on your driver’s display itself, which makes turning around a tight corner with traffic behind you a lot easier.
While the extensive features list of Creta’s ADAS suite is appreciable, their functionality is even more praise worthy. Setting up an ADAS suite for Indian conditions is an especially tough task, with such an unpredictable driving environment. But the Creta’s suite’s tuning is India-friendly, wherein it doesn’t feel intrusive or overly sensitive to the traffic around. So you can actually use it on highways and expressways which have proper markings, and doesn’t have to be a party trick to show off to your friends.
Additionally, you can even turn them off when not required, and they will stay turned off even after restarting the vehicle. So no interference when you don’t want it!
These are the top features that’s present in the Creta’s ADAS suite. Which one of these features do you think is the most useful? Let us know in the comments. The Hyundai Creta is priced from Rs 11 lakh to Rs 20.3 lakh (ex-showroom).
