The Hyunda Exter, which is due for a launch on July 10, is set to make things very interesting in the micro SUV space, which has been enjoyed solely by the Tata Punch so far. Without a doubt, there are still quite a few absent pieces in the Exter’s puzzle with missing details on the cabin layout, powertrain output and its full features.
But even still, we have a fair amount of information on what it’ll get and what to expect, thanks to multiple teasers. So here’s everything we know about the Hyundai Exter so far:
Just like its direct rival, Hyundai has taken the beefy approach for the Exter’s styling, which is evident in its stubby and boxy elements, flared fenders, and squared-out wheel arches. Other bits like the body cladding and its upright stance further add to its rugged design trait.
The LED DRLs get an H-shaped insignia – as seen on the rear taillights, courtesy the spied images – while the main headlight unit is housed in a rectangular contour and flanks the black grille in the middle of the nose.
In terms of colour options, it’ll be available to spec in six mono-tone and three dual-tone exterior shades.

Hyundai is yet to reveal any details about the cabin layout and styling, but it could be similar to the Grand i10 Nios’ interiors.
Even though we don’t know what the cabin will look like, we do know that it’ll boast a couple of segment-first features like a sunroof and even a dashcam with dual cameras (front and rear). The latter will get three different recording modes: Normal, Safety and Vacation. The functionality of each of the modes is yet to be seen.
Other confirmed features come in the form of the safety equipment which include six airbags as standard (segment first), ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and a rearview camera.
Apart from these features revealed by the carmaker, we expect the Exter’s brochure to include features such as a large touchscreen system, automatic climate control, wireless phone charging, cruise control and push button start/stop at the time of launch.
These features will be split between five trims: EX, S, SX, SX(O) and SX(O) Connect.
The Exter will borrow its propulsion duties from the Grand i10 Nios’ powertrain. The micro SUV will get the same 1.2-litre petrol engine with 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT. However, the state of tune of this engine in the Exter hasn’t been confirmed. The engine will also be available to order with a CNG kit and a 5-speed manual with reduced output when run on the cleaner fuel.

With prices for the Tata Punch starting from the Rs 5.99 lakh mark, Hyundai should position the Exter with a similar starting price tag. As for its rival, apart from the aforementioned Tata Punch, which will be its chief competitor, the Exter will offer a rugged alternative to the Maruti Swift and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. It will also square off against sub-4m SUVs like the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger.
