Harley-Davidson has recently introduced the X440, their latest most affordable motorcycle for India. It comes with an exceptionally attractive price tag of Rs 2,29,000 (ex-showroom). Positioned in the retro roadster segment, it directly competes with the renowned Royal Enfield Classic 350. The Harley-Davidson X440 boasts a muscular design language infused with neo-retro elements. It bears a resemblance to its bigger sibling- the Harley-Davidson XR1200, featuring a robust fuel tank and sleek side panels.
In contrast, the Royal Enfield Classic 350 has timeless retro design that stands out from the crowd. The bulk of the Classic 350 perfectly complements the brand philosophy- 'built like a gun'. Notable design elements include a circular headlight with a peaked nacelle, a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, and a triangular side panel, all contributing to its clean and muscular appearance.
Powering the Harley-Davidson X440 is a two-valve 440cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine equipped with an oil-cooler. This powertrain generates 27.4PS and 38Nm. Comparatively, the Classic 350 relies on a 349cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine, producing 20.2PS and 27Nm. The X440 clearly outperforms the Classic 350 in terms of power and performance.
When it comes to the underpinnings, the Harley-Davidson X440 showcases a premium setup. It features a 43mm inverted fork and preload-adjustable gas-charged twin shocks. Additionally, the X440 is equipped with ByBre discs on both ends, complemented by dual-channel ABS as standard. The motorcycle rolls on 18-/17-inch alloys fitted with new MRF Zapper Hyke tires.
On the other hand, the Royal Enfield Classic 350 incorporates a telescopic fork and 6-step preload-adjustable dual shock absorbers. Braking duties are handled by a 300mm disc at the front and a 270mm disc (or 153mm drum, depending on the variant) at the rear.
In terms of features, the Harley-Davidson X440 excels with its advanced offerings. It boasts a TFT console that provides basic readouts, along with smartphone connectivity that enables turn-by-turn navigation, music control, and call/message alerts.
In comparison, the Classic 350 features a more traditional analogue console with a speedometer, accompanied by a digital inset showcasing a tripmeter, fuel gauge, and service reminder. Furthermore, it offers an optional Tripper navigation pod with smartphone connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation.
The Harley-Davidson X440 starts at Rs 2,29,000, positioning it approximately Rs 37,000 above the base variant of the Royal Enfield Classic 350, which is priced at Rs 1,93,080 (both ex-showroom). Despite the price premium, the X440 offers more power, performance, premium components, and of course, the Harley-Davidson brand name. As a result, the Harley-Davidson X440 presents a compelling option that truly competes with the Classic 350, justifying its higher price tag.
