The Hero Xtreme 160R recently got a much-needed update and the new 4-valve version is sportier than before. But how does it compare to the Bajaj Pulsar NS160, a bike that’s been considered one of the sportiest entry-level offerings in the country for the past decade and more? Here’s the lowdown on in 8 pics:
While the new Xtreme 160R 4V looks similar to the old model, minor design tweaks and funkier colours help give it a fresh appeal. In that sense, the NS’ streetfighter design theme has been around for a decade, and though it’s by no means boring to look at, it feels dated.
The Xtreme 160R 4V gets all-LED lighting, which makes it unique in its segment. The Pulsar NS160, on the other hand, despite having an aggressive headlight design, sports a simple halogen setup.
The Hero Xtreme 160R 4V gets an LCD instrument console with Bluetooth connectivity (in the Connect, and Pro variants only) enabling a few features for security and navigation – among others – albeit via an app. Alternatively, there are no connectivity options on the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 and it still gets the dated semi-digital instrument console.
Powering the new Xtreme 160R is an updated 163.2cc air--cooled (with an oil cooler) single-cylinder engine with a 4-valve head which now produces 16.9PS and 14.6Nm. The Pulsar NS160 gets the familiar 160.3cc air-cooled single-cylinder motor producing 17.2PS and 14.6Nm. Hence, in this department, at least on paper, the Pulsar still dominates. That said, both bikes get a 5-speed transmission.
The Hero Xtreme 160R 4V and the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 both get similar underpinnings in the form of an upside down (USD) fork and a monoshock at the back. However, the NS160 gets a gas-charged monoshock. Both get disc brakes front and rear, but the NS160 comes with dual-channel ABS as standard whereas the Xtreme 160R 4V gets only single-channel ABS.
The Hero Xtreme 160R 4V is priced between Rs 1,27,300 and Rs 1,36,500 for the Standard, Connect and Pro variants respectively. The Bajaj Pulsar NS160, on the other hand, is priced at Rs 1,36,000 (all prices ex-showroom).
Verdict:
The new Hero Xtreme 160R 4V gets some much-needed updates in the form of a 4-valve cylinder head, a USD fork (Pro variant only), and fresh colours, among others. But the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 gets dual-channel ABS as standard and makes more power while costing roughly the same as the Xtreme. Hence, if all you need is performance, then look no further than the Pulsar. But if you want a balance of attention-grabbing looks, modern equipment and features, and decent performance, the Xtreme makes for a solid choice.
