KTM 390 SMC R full details revealed
Gets a new 4-inch TFT display
Weighs 11kg lighter than the 390 Duke
KTM has finally revealed the full details for the KTM 390 SMC R which made its debut at EICMA 2024. The 390 SMC is a supermoto motorcycle that’s based on the same platform as the already-popular KTM 390 Duke.
The KTM 390 SMC R gets the same fire-breathing 399cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine from the Gen 3 390 Duke . This engine produces 46PS and 39Nm, and it is known for being one of the most exciting single cylinder engines in the category.
The KTM 390 SMC R also weighs 11kg lighter than the current generation 390 Duke which is already a light motorcycle. At 154kg, the 390 SMC R is definitely going to offer some proper supermoto-style performance. The 390 SMC R also gets a relatively smaller 9-litre fuel tank which has also contributed to this overall weight saving, though the trade-off will be far lower range.
The KTM 390 SMC R gets a fully-adjustable WP Apex USD fork with 230mm of travel, and a monoshock which can be tuned for compression and rebound. This motorcycle gets a 320mm front and 230mm rear disk brake setup, same as the 390 Duke which is praised for its superb brake bite and power.
As a proper supermoto, the 390 SMC R gets 17 inch wheels on both ends, the international model also gets the super grippy Michelin Power 5 tyres. The 390 SMC R also gets switchable ABS at the back, same as other KTM motorcycles. A new 4-inch TFT display has been introduced for the 390 SMC R which goes well with the overall design of the motorcycle.
After the supermoto made its debut, the chances of it coming to India seemed quite bleak since the segment doesn’t really exist here. However, the excitement around the bike has grown after it was showcased at IBW 2024. This might just cause KTM India to have a change of heart, and we’d have our fingers crossed for it. The launch of the 390 SMC R might just break the chicken and egg cycle for the supermoto segment in India. The ADV segment has grown exponentially in terms of demand as well the bikes on offer. However, a supermoto would offer the best of both worlds – sporty riding with an ability to take on bad patches of the road. Which could be a middleground for those who don’t really want a bulky ADV instead something really nimble to take on every ride without worrying about the road surfaces.
Also, the bike would be manufactured right here in Chakan, along with the other 390s. We would really love to see the 390 SMC R on offer here, even if it is in limited numbers. At least we’ll get to see how much substance the hype around supermotos in India really is.
