With the whole world moving towards an electric future, it seems like an Austrian and a Swedish manufacturer are about to launch their first street legal electric bikes in 2025. The manufacturers in question are KTM and Husqvarna and the information regarding the expected launch timeline has come courtesy of  VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) decoding documents, which are filed with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) so that specific models can be identified by its VINs in the USA.

In those documents, KTM’s “Electric Freeride (Street Legal)” and Husqvarna’s “Electric Pioneer (Street Legal)” bikes are mentioned suggesting these two could be the models the manufacturers are planning to launch next year. According to the details mentioned in the documents, the upcoming electric bikes could get a 5.54kWh capacity battery pack.

Back in 2022, Pierer Industrie, KTM and Husqvarna’s parent company, showcased four electric prototypes, one of which was a children’s bike. The other three were the Husqvarna E-Pilen, KTM E-Duke, and KTM Freeride E LV. The E-Pilen and the E-Duke were based on the then KTM 390 Duke and had a 10kW motor. The Freeride E LV was a street legal enduro style version of the Freeride E-XC off-roader with a 9kW motor. The KTM Electric Freeride and the Husqvarna Electric Pioneer could be the final production versions of the Freeride E LV and the E-Pilen respectively.

If that is the case, then the Electric Freeride and the Electric Pioneer could get removable battery packs. KTM is a founding member of the European Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium which also contains more than 20 members including the likes of Piaggio, Honda and Yamaha. If those electric bikes get removable batteries, then both can benefit from the swappable battery network of the consortium and the arrival of such electric bikes could push the available swappable battery technology to a more sustainable level.
