Mahindra revealed it has 2.92 lakh pending orders as of May 1.
Nearly 40% of all pending orders are made up of the ScorpioN and Scorpio Classic combined.
Mahindra garnered 57,000 bookings on a monthly average basis.
XUV700 pending deliveries are just short of 80,000 units.
Thar gets 14,000 average bookings every month, same as the combined tally of ScorpioN and Scorpio Classic.
Mahindra will ramp up production of XUV700 and Scorpio N to bring down waiting times.
It seems like Mahindra is reeling in more than it can handle and the result is evident in the number of open orders for the carmaker, which have piled up and are just short of the 3-lakh mark. Revealed at its FY23 financial results, the carmaker stated that its pending deliveries stand at 2.92 lakh units, most of which are made up by the combined orders for the Scorpio N, Scorpio Classic, and the Thar (both 4WD and RWD). Let’s take a look at its model-wise pending orders as on May 1:
The Mahindra Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic have the highest combined pending tally of any Mahindra vehicles, with 1.17 lakh orders awaiting delivery. That accounts for nearly 40% of Mahindra’s total tally of pending orders and the combined monthly booking tally for the SUVs stand at 14,000 units.
Between the two, the Scorpio N has a higher waiting period that goes up to 8 months in a few cities, while the Scorpio Classic’s wait time is four months at the highest.
Even after nearly 2 years in the market, the demand for the XUV700 just doesn’t seem to taper off. The SUV witnesses around 8,000 average bookings every month and currently has 78,000 orders pending delivery. The high influx of bookings and the already high number of pending orders take the SUV’s delivery periods as high as up to 8 months in select cities.
There probably hasn’t been a time when the Thar wasn’t in demand in India. And especially after the launch of the RWD iteration of the off-raoding SUV, the demand has been strongly consistent with an average of 14,000 orders each month and a pending tally of 58,000 units. This includes both the 4WD and RWD trims of the Thar, and this high demand is likely one of the reasons behind the delay of the long-wheelbase 5-door Thar.
The XUV300 and its electric sibling, the XUV400, account for nearly 10 percent of Mahindra’s total pending orders with a total of 29,000 open bookings. They reel in 10,000 combined orders on an average each month and have a waiting period of up to 6 and 4 months for the XUV300 and XUV400, respectively. That number for the XUV300 could see a surge once the facelifted iteration gets launched, which could happen soon, as it was spotted testing recently.
The Bolero and Bolero Neo SUVs have a combined pending tally of 8,200 orders. Both the SUVs manage to average a combined 10,000 monthly orders and both have an average waiting period of around 3 months throughout the nation.
Such a high number of pending orders should be an alarming situation – not just for the carmaker, but also for the customers that are putting their money down only to find that they might not get their new vehicle in the same year.

However, Mahindra did say that it will be ramping up the production of the XUV700 and Scorpio N, so it should help clear out a few of those pending orders. Also commendable is the fact that Mahindra won’t be having any new car launches in 2023, which will allow the workforce to focus on clearing that looming pile of pending delivery and get the vehicles delivered to the respective customers in a reasonable time period.
