The Maruti Brezza and Toyota Taisor are effectively distant siblings to one another, given that the Taisor is the rebadged avatar of the Maruti Fronx. Both benefit from mild-hybrid technology, but that tech is paired to engines that are rather different in nature. Despite the differences, the Brezza and Taisor put out very similar on paper figures, and in this story, we find out whether their real-world performance will be as close as well or not. A quick look at their specifications before it:

The Brezza gets a bigger 1.5-litre petrol engine, boasting an additional cylinder over the Toyota Taisor’s 1-litre three-cylinder engine. But while the Brezza is naturally aspirated, the Taisor’s engine is turbocharged, which helps it boast a bigger torque figure.
Both cars get the option of a 5-speed MT and a 6-speed automatic torque converter transmission.

Surprise, surprise! Despite their similar output figures, the Taisor is significantly quicker than the Brezza. The bigger displacement and extra cylinder doesn’t really help the Brezza’s case, as the Taisor gets a clean sweep through the test.
The difference in performance is huge in the 0-100kmph sprint test, but the Brezza does slightly better in the quarter mile and kickdown test. Even still, the difference is nearly 2 seconds in the latter tests. That’s what a turbocharger can do for an engine’s performance – despite being a cylinder less and smaller in displacement!

In the braking test too, the Taisor stopped 1.06 metres before the Brezza.
