The Maruti Fronx is the latest addition in the Indian marque’s portfolio and it brings with it a rather unique proposition: it’s a crossover based on the Baleno hatchback. Then there’s the new 1-litre Boosterjet turbo-petrol engine, earlier offered in the Baleno RS, a unanimous favourite amongst Maruti enthusiasts. The Fronx is based on the Baleno hatchback, yet its pricing fights for the same spot as the Maruti Brezza.
But now that the prices for the Fronx are out, we know where it sits in that equation, slotting in the gap left between the two. To help you narrow down on a contender, here’s a price comparison table for reference:

As you can see, between the Baleno and Fronx, the base spec Sigma trim has a price premium of Rs 86,000 for the crossover, which also accounts for the minimum difference between the two. There is a discrepancy of Rs 88,000 between their AMT trims and the gap wides going up the variant ladder, topping out at Rs 2.18 lakh between their respective top-spec automatic trims. That’s because the top-spec Fronx gets a much superior 1-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic instead of the AMT that’s offered with the Baleno and Fronx’s naturally aspirated petrol engine.
Compared to the Brezza, the Fronx is actually the more affordable of the two, with a price difference of Rs 82,000 between their base variants. And as you move up the ladder to their top-spec guises, the price variance is exactly Rs 1 lakh in favour of the Fronx, despite the newly launched model getting a superior 1-litre turbo-petrol engine.

So even though it sits comfortably within the gap between the Baleno and Brezza, the Fronx slots in the same segment as the Brezza and can be considered as a rugged alternative to the Baleno – that is if you don’t mind spending that extra bit of cash over the premium hatchback. We’ve also done a comparison comparing the fuel efficiencies of the Fronx and Baleno, and the Fronx and Brezza as well, while a comprehensive comparison with the Brezza can be found here.
