You can better listen to the Nettuno V6 engine in all its glory with the roof off

Back when Maserati unveiled the MC20 sports car, it confirmed that an open-top version of the 2-seater would arrive in the future, and the same was teased in December 2021. Now, it's finally here in the form of the Cielo, which means one basically gets to experience all the thrills of the MC20 with the top off.

Under the engine cover though, things remain the same. There’s a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine, delivering 630PS and 730Nm, that is paired to an 8-speed DCT. It can propel the car to a top speed of over 320kmph. The main performance-related difference is that it is 65kg heavier due to the carbon-fibre monocoque being revised for more rigidity.

The main party trick in the MC20 Cielo is its open-top nature of course. Its retractable roof takes 12 seconds to open and close, and can be specified to have a chromatic glass panel that can turn from transparent to opaque thanks to polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) tech.

Aside from the convertible roof, the open-top sports car looks largely unchanged from the coupe, with its sleek, poster-worthy design. The Cielo however does get different wheels, and the engine air intakes had to be relocated to accommodate the retractable roof. Inside, there’s ice-colored Alcantara leather all over.

That’s not all for the Maserati MC20 as the sports car is slated to get an all-electric powertrain soon. Back home, we’re expecting the coupe iteration to arrive in the second quarter of 2022 onward at a price tag of around Rs 3.5 crore (ex-showroom). It will take on the Ferrari F8 Tributo and the upcoming India-bound McLaren 720S.
