Mercedes India Sees Highest-ever Second Quarterly Car Sales Led By E-Class And GLC

• Mercedes delivered over 7,000 cars in the first half of this year. 

• The carmaker has an order bank of over 6,000 cars. 

• Sedans have a waiting period of up to three months, while the Maybach S 580 takes 4-5 months. 

• GLS SUV has the longest wait of up to 11 months. 

Mercedes-Benz India has announced its quarterly and half-yearly sales numbers for 2022. It sold the highest number of luxury cars in this second quarter (Q2), with over 7,000 units retailed since January. The Mercedes E-Class sedan is still the best-selling Mercedes, while the GLC tops the carmaker’s SUV sales. 

Between January and June, the carmaker sold 7,573 luxury cars and SUVs. Mercedes has received orders of over 6,000 cars with a waiting period of up to 5 months for most models. The C-Class, E-Class and S-Class sedans and GLA, GLC and GLE SUVs have been the biggest contributors to the carmaker’s growth.

Martin Schwenk, the Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, said, “This sales record becomes even more significant against the backdrop of continued supply side challenges, triggered by global developments and also local market challenges.”

Similar to other carmakers, Mercedes is facing supply chain issues such as the ongoing semiconductor shortage. Its cars are imported to India as completely built-up units (CBU) or knock-down kits (CKD) for local assembly.

Future plans 

“Q3 will be highly exciting as we line-up some of the most anticipated Mercedes-Benz models from our global portfolio, for our Indian customers, creating a completely new benchmark,” Martin Schwenk says. 

Mercedes is also gearing up to introduce its first electric vehicle (EV), the EQS electric sedan, later this year which will be assembled locally. Later on, the next-generation GLC SUV is expected to make its way to the country.

Mercedes’ new sales victory comes as a reassuring sign of post-pandemic recovery with a double-digit growth over last year. In the near future, we expect electric vehicles (EVs) from Mercedes’ global lineup – such as the EQE sedan and EQB SUV – to arrive on our shores.
