Retains the 2-litre turbo-petrol mill, and is the most powerful Civic in existence.
Gets a revised 6-speed manual gearbox which sends drive to the front wheels.
Holds the lap record for a FWD car at the Suzuka Circuit.
Features sportier bumpers, new wheels, a prominent rear spoiler, as well as a triple exhaust setup.
Will be attempting to retake its FWD crown at the Nurburgring circuit soon.
After a teaser campaign that went on for what seemed like eternity, the folks at Honda have finally unleashed the latest iteration of the performance-focused Civic Type-R. Based on the 11th-generation Civic, it continues to improve upon the hardcore Type-R reputation we all know and love, while still keeping things a little old school.
While the big talking point ideally would be about what’s under the hood, unfortunately Honda hasn't divulged the proper nitty gritties yet. What we do know is that the trusty turbocharged 2-litre petrol petrol motor is still there, but has been refined to surpass the outgoing model’s 320PS to make it the most powerful Civic ever.
What’s more, not only has Honda kept the Type-R a pure ICE offering, it has also retained the hot hatch’s front-wheel drive (FWD) layout and has kept the six-speed stick shifter, which has been revised. Essentially, we’re still getting a no-frills Civic Type-R.
Despite us not getting to know the performance numbers of the new Civic Type-R, it's already achieved some impressive feats including, being the quickest FWD car at the Suzuka Circuit with a lap time of 2:23.120.
Like the standard model, most of the clean philosophy is retained, but being a Type-R, it ups the ante on aggression. We’ve got beefier air intakes up front, a honeycomb mesh front grille and sporty Type-R wheels.
The rear gets a prominent wing, a diffuser and a triple exhaust setup. Inside, the sporty theme continues with a red and black theme, racy seats, as well as an onboard data logger to know all the real-time workings of the car’s performance characteristics.
Expect all the details on the 2022 Honda Civic Type-R’s performance characteristics to be revealed when the FWD speed demon goes on sale in Honda’s home market (it’s Japan if you didn’t know) around September 2022. Could the new Type-R reclaim its FWD crown at the legendary Nurburgring circuit? Drop your thoughts in the comments below.
