In addition to the 27 already existing standards, three new norms have been introduced for both passenger and commercial electric vehicles.

Quick Highlights

  • New Norms introduced by BIS to keep check on safety and quality of EV development.

  • 3 New norms added to scrutinize safety and performance of batteries for commercial and passenger segment EVs.

  • A total of 30 norms are in place to keep a check on EV manufacturing.

The ever growing EV popularity in the Indian auto space has made way for new standard safety norms which have been introduced by the Bureau Of Indian Standards (BIS). This is to further keep a check on the safety and quality standards of the electric vehicles produced in the country and uphold them.

The "IS 18590: 2024" and "IS 18606: 2024" norms, which are intended to emphasize the safety and performance of the batteries to further ensure meeting the safety standards for the passenger segment electric vehicles. BIS has also introduced the “IS 18294: 2023” norm to keep a check on the production of commercial EV segments like e-rickshaws, and e-karts which have tremendously grown on Indian roads, as an alternative for short-distance commutes.
