The new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado promises to be a thorough reinvention over the outgoing model, but still stays true to its original form and roots

Mark the date on your calendar - August 2 - because that’s when the new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is going to make its global debut. It will share its relations with the recently revealed Lexus GX and will slot below the full-blown Land Cruiser LC 300 in the carmaker’s lineup.

Expect a whole lot of right angled boxy panels making the exterior even more off-road ready, if it wasn’t already. The sleek rectangular headlights flank the chunky rectangular grille which sports the Toyota nameplate lettering.

While Toyota is embracing cues from the original Land Cruiser, similarities with the Lexus GX also become apparent in the way its window line tapers upwards for the rear quarter glass. You get vertically stacked rectangular taillights with rectangular elements within it, which flank the rather upright-looking tailgate. Everything that the teaser showcased hints at a very beefed up and muscular SUV.

The underpinnings will be shared with the Lexus GX, as it is based on the same TNGA Frame. It’ll of course get a bunch of off-road gadgetry, including four-wheel drive with a low range and a locking rear differential. And though the powertrains aren’t confirmed yet, it could get a twin-turbocharged V6 like the Lexus GX, while a smaller, more efficient engine (read hybrid) could also be on offer.

In India, Toyota retails the full blown Land Cruiser 300 currently, which is priced at Rs 2.10 crore (ex-showroom), but we hope the Prado does come here to make the Land Cruiser tag more accessible. This new model will also mark the return of the Land Cruiser nameplate back to America. The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado will be a rival to the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and BMW X3.
