The Kicks was one of the two SUVs that made up the Nissan portfolio in India, before BS6 phase 2 norms made the carmaker axe the SUV from its lineup

  • Nissan Kicks gets discontinued.

  • Low sales and BS6 Phase 2 emission norms are reasons behind the discontinuation.

  • Nissan Kicks was launched in 2019 as a rival to Hyundai Creta and its ilk.

  • Prices of the compact SUV ranged between Rs 9.50 lakh and Rs 14.90 lakh.

The implementation of the new, more stringent BS6 Phase 2 emissions regulations have resulted in a whole lotta cars getting discontinued and the Nissan Kicks too has joined the bandwagon. Sadly, the discontinuation of the Kicks means that there is only one model in the Nissan lineup currently – the Magnite

Why the discontinuation?

The Nissan Kicks was evidently an older model, which was launched in the country back in 2019. Since then, the compact SUV didn’t receive any significant updates and the segment just kicked up its game to a whole new level, apologies for the pun there.

So, it lagged behind in terms of the cabin experience and in the things that it offered, which directly translated into poor sales figures. And now that the new, more stern BS6 Phase 2 emission norms are here, it doesn’t make sense for Nissan to put money into updating the powertrain of the compact SUV, hence, the Kicks has been axed from the lineup.

A recap

Before Nissan pulled the plug on the Kicks, it was powered by a power unit that was jointly developed with Mercedes - a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine making 156PS and 254Nm. Transmission options included a five-speed manual or CVT, which delivered power to the front wheels only.

In terms of features, the Kicks wasn’t much behind compared to today's standards and packed connected car technology, a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, climate control, remote engine start stop and automatic headlights. Safety was handled by four airbags, ABS with EBD, 360-degree camera, and electronic stability control.

Discontinuation of the Kicks leaves Nissan with a single model to offer to customers, but there’s more to come from the carmaker thanks to its alliance with Renault. Two SUVs will surface post 2025, but before that, a new Triber-based MPV and the global X-Trail SUV have also been confirmed for 2024.

Nissan sold the Kicks between Rs 9.50 lakh and Rs 14.90 lakh (ex-showroom). It used to rival the likes of the MG Astor, Kia Seltos, MG Hector, Skoda Kushaq and Hyundai Creta.
