Kia India has recently marked a significant achievement for its sub-compact SUV, the Sonet, which has racked up over 4 lakh units in sales in the 44 months since its launch in September 2020.
Domestic sales for the Kia Sonet constituted 3,17,754 units while over 85,814 of the made-in-India SUV were dispatched to overseas markets.
About 63 percent of customers of the Sonet preferred variants equipped with a sunroof. When it comes to what type of engine people like, 37 percent preferred the 1.5-litre diesel engine, while 63 percent preferred the petrol engine options.

Kia has also stated that demand for the automatic transmission variants have grown significantly. The 7-speed DCT transmission has become very popular, with a 37.5 percent increase in customers choosing it since its launch. Overall, automatic transmissions (like 7DCT and 6AT) are picked by 28 percent of customers, while the iMT transmission has a steady following of 23 percent of people choosing it.
Kia has recently increased the Sonet’s accessibility by introducing four new mid-spec trims: HTE(O) and HTK(O), in both diesel and petrol each. The HTE(O) model now comes with the addition of a sunroof, while the HTK(O) offers a sunroof and LED connected taillamps, automatic climate control, and a rear defogger, making the sub-compact SUV more approachable. These new variants are expected to further strengthen the brand’s overall sales.
The Kia Sonet is available in three different engine options. The first is 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 83 PS, paired only with a 5-speed manual transmission. Then there’s a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 116 PS mated to 6-speed manual, 6-speed IMT and 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission options. For people eyeing more performance, a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine producing 120 PS can also be opted for in 6-speed IMT and 7-speed DCT options.
The Kia Sonet’s price range starts at Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom). It rivals other sub-compact SUVs like the Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Brezza and the Tata Nexon.
