Two 650cc bikes from Royal Enfield, but how different are they?

(Update: The all-new Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 has been launched. Check the details in our launch story here.)

Royal Enfield had recently unveiled a custom version of their upcoming Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 at Motoverse 2023, called the Shotgun 650 Motoverse Edition. Since it is based on the Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650, let’s take a closer look at the differences between the two:

Design

The Shotgun 650 is based on the Super Meteor 650 and both bikes share the same frame and many parts in common. But there are a few styling differences that make the Shotgun 650 stand out.

The Shotgun 650 gets a headlight cowl, and the indicators are ahead of the fork, givng it a distinct look. The one on the Super Meteor is a simple round unit that gives a more retro appeal, complete with a brushed metal finish on the bezel. Also, the indicators in the Super Meteor 650 are bulbs whereas the custom Shotgun gets LED ones. The footpegs on the Super Meteor are forward set complementing easy-to-reach handlebars in line with the cruiser characteristic, while the ones on the Shotgun 650 are more mid-set with flatter wider handlebars giving the rider a relatively sportier riding posture. It also gets bar-end mirrors as opposed to conventional ones in the Super Meteor.

The fuel tank shape looks slightly different from the one in the Super Meteor. More importantly, the seating setups are completely different. The Shotgun 650 comes with a single ‘floating’ rider’s seat with the option to mount either a luggage rack or additional pillion seat. The Super Meteor 650 comes with a split seat setup in the lower variants and a single-piece contoured seat in the higher-end variants. The pillion seat in the lower-end variants can be swapped with a luggage rack on this bike too, but the solo seat in the Shotgun looks better. Another key difference lies in the shape of the rear fender. As opposed to the full-length fender in the Super Meteor 650, the one in the Shotgun is chopped. It goes well with the solo seat design.

Lastly, the Shotgun 650 comes with twin blacked-out peashooter exhausts while the Super Meteor comes with twin barrel exhausts with chrome finish. Expect the exhaust note to be different too.

Engine

Powering both motorcycles is the same Royal Enfield 648cc, air-cooled parallel twin engine that we have seen on the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650  as well as the Continental GT 650, and it makes 47 PS at 7250rpm and 52.3Nm at 5650 rpm in the Super Meteor. Expect the one in the Shotgun to make around the same output figures too. That said, the Super Meteor gets a matte black finish whereas it’s glossy in the Shotgun. Interestingly, the crankcase gets a ‘Royal Enfield’ logo in the Shotgun as opposed to the ‘R’ logo in the Super Meteor 650.

Underpinnings

The Super Meteor and Shotgun 650 both come with a 43mm inverted Showa Fork along with twin rear shock absorbers. Braking is handled by 320mm front and 300mm rear discs. But the wheels on the Shotgun 650 come with a new design, complete with rim stickers.

Instrumentation

Both bikes feature the same semi-digital instrument cluster with the Royal Enfield tripper turn-by-turn navigation module.

Verdict

The Shotgun 650 Motoverse Edition is an ultra-exclusive bobber that is intended to capture the hearts of solo riders while the Super Meteor 650 is a pure cruiser that is for those who want to munch miles on the highways with style and comfort. The Motoverse Edition priced at Rs. 4.25 lakh ex-showroom which isn’t surprising considering the fact that this variant is a special edition limited to 25 units, that too only for those who attended the event. All in all, the Shotgun 650 Motoverse Edition is meant for those who want the bragging rights of an exclusive Royal Enfield that will be delivered (in January 2024) even before the production version hits the roads. Expect the price of the production-spec version of the Shotgun to be around Rs 3.5 lakh, and it will be launched some time after the deliveries of the custom version begins, in January 2024 itself.

The base Astral variant of the Super Meteor comes at an ex-showroom price of Rs. 3,60,899, the midspec interstellar variant is priced at Rs 3,76,124 and the high end Celestial variant is priced at Rs 3,91,346, all prices are ex-showroom Delhi.
