The Global NCAP has updated its procedures for more stringent crash testing, and the first model tested is the Skoda Kushaq. And the good news is that the first heavily localised MQB-A0-IN offering has aced the test with a perfect five star rating. It also sits way above the Korean counterparts – the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta – which managed only three stars in the Global NCAP crash test.

Like before, the SUV was crash tested at 64kmph, however, the new protocols now include side impact tests and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) fitment. Global NCAP has used the Kushaq’s base Active variant for most parts of this test, which gets dual airbags, electronic stability control, and ISOFIX child seat mounts. However, the side pole impact test was conducted with the higher end trim with six airbags. The SUV secured five stars in both Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and Child Occupant Protection (COP).
Commenting on this feat, Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India said, “The Volkswagen Group has always focused on providing the highest level of safety across its model range. The Made-in-India, Made-for-India MQB-A0-IN platform is no exception. It has been internally tested for various impacts and is developed with a key focus on safety. This is an important milestone and a gratifying accomplishment for us, as both our INDIA 2.0 SUV models have achieved the pinnacle of global safety standards. Since the launch of the Skoda Kushaq and the Volkswagen Taigun, both cars have established a strong market presence and contributed significantly to the success of the brand and the Group in India. I am confident that this recognition will help continue our brands’ growth momentum.”
The Skoda Kushaq scored 29.64 out of 34 in AOP. The SUV offered good protection to both the front occupants’ head, neck, and knees. However, protection for the driver’s tibias and chest were adequate, the same for the co-driver was rated as good.
In the newly added side impact test, the SUV also managed to shield the head, abdomen and pelvis, however the chest had adequate protection. The side pole impact test was conducted in a version with curtain airbags (limited to Style and Monte Carlo) that meets fitment requirements. It offered good protection to the head and pelvis, while the abdomen and chest had adequate and marginal protection.
Global NCAP also added that the footwell and bodyshell were rated stable and the latter is capable of withstanding further loadings.
The Kushaq’s 42 out of 49 rating is the highest score for any made-in-India vehicle tested by Global NCAP yet. The 3-year old and 18 month old dummies were fitted in rearward facing child seats and it offered good protection for both of them in both the frontal and side impact tests.

ESC fitment is standard across the Kushaq’s range and Global NCAP said its performance was as per its requirements. Plus, the rear seats come with three-point seat belts for all occupants, but Global NCAP pointed out the Kushaq doesn’t offer the possibility of switching off the passenger airbag while fitting a child seat.
Currently, the Skoda Kushaq is priced between Rs 11.29 lakh and Rs 19.49 lakh (ex-showroom). Its rivals include the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun, MG Astor, Maruti Grand Vitara and the Toyota Hyryder.
