This one-off bike commemorates VR46’s illustrious MotoGP career

  • The Valentino Rossi edition of the YZF-R1 was unveiled at the 2021 EICMA.
  • Comes wrapped in a special VR46 carbon fibre bodywork.

  • Gets Yamaha’s special GYTR bits like an Akrapovic exhaust and Marchesini wheels.

Yamaha had something special planned for EICMA 2021: a special One More Lap event to commemorate the career of nine-time MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi.

And as part of the tribute, Yamaha took the wraps off a one-off Valentino Rossi edition of its flagship bike, the YZF-R1, called the R1 GYTR VR46 Tribute.

The YZF-R1 GYTR VR46 Tribute comes laden with carbon fibre bodywork, wrapped in an exquisite livery designed by none other than Aldo Drudi, the man responsible for all Valentino Rossi helmets.

But that’s not all. You see, this special R1 will be used by Valentino for future training purposes at his home turf, the Misano circuit in Italy. And to ensure Rossi has an EPIC time astride it, Yamaha has thrown in truckloads of top-spec components from its upcoming GYTR performance part lineup and even the 2021 WSBK championship winning YZF-R1 ridden by Toprak Razgatlıoglu.

The list of GYTR add-ons includes an electronic throttle, a slipper clutch, a radiator kit, air scoops for the disc brakes, new handlebar switches, and adjustable rear sets, all topped off by Marchesini wheels and a unique Akrapovic factory exhaust with VR46 badges.

As for the WSBK-borrowed bits, there’s a carbon fibre subframe, an underslung swingarm, adjustable triple clamp, sensor kit, and a 22-litre fuel tank. Additionally, the bike is sprung on WSBK-spec Ohlins suspension at both ends, while the braking setup comprises top-spec Brembo discs, calipers, and master cylinder.

Lastly, let’s talk about the powerhouse. The VR46 edition of the R1 features the same 998cc inline-four engine from the standard YZF-R1. But thanks to a Marelli REX140 ECU, dedicated wiring harness, a WSBK-spec air filter, and the Akrapovic exhaust, it wouldn’t be wrong to assume the VR46 edition R1 will be substantially more powerful than the stock bike. All electronics can be toggled via a race dashboard, featuring a special ‘Grazie Vale’ startup message.

With all these bits, the YZF-R1 GYTR VR46 Tribute rounds up to be a one-of-a-kind affair and a fitting tribute to the legend that Valentino Rossi is!
