A near production-ready prototype of what seems like the upcoming Suzuki V-Strom 700 has been spotted for the first time, undergoing testing in Italy.
The last new bike from Suzuki was the GSX-S1000GT, which was launched last year. Now with a new 700cc parallel twin platform, Suzuki is all set to bring an adventure bike to rival the Yamaha Tenere 700.
A new patent design reported in October last year showcased Suzuki’s all-new 700cc parallel twin engine. That said, the Japanese marque will probably continue to use the ‘V’ moniker for its adventure bikes.
One of the primary aspects of a parallel twin is that it is more compact than the V-twin that currently powers the SV650 and V-Strom 650 XT, thus allowing the bikemaker to optimise the chassis space.
The V-Strom 650XT makes 70.7PS and 62Nm from its 645cc V-twin motor and we expect the new parallel twin engine to be more potent than its predecessor. The new bike might also carry over the current model’s three riding modes, three-stage traction control and dual-channel ABS.
Also, as showcased by the design patent, the V-Strom 700’s airbox will be placed under the seat to allow for the air filter to be swapped without having to remove the fuel tank.
The spy shots of the bike undergoing test runs show a new upside down fork at the front. Towards the rear, we can see a slightly different swingarm than the current model. The test unit sports tubeless tyre compatible wire-spoked wheels, with the front wheel presumably a 21-inch one and the rear a 17- or 18-inch one. For context, the India-spec V-Strom 650XT currently runs on 19- and 17-inch spoke wheels at the front and rear, respectively, with dual-purpose Bridgestone Battlax A40 tubeless tyres.
Further, the spy shots reveal that the V-Strom 700 will adopt the same design language as its older sibling, the V-Strom 1050. There’s a DR Big inspired fascia and this V-Strom also gets a new twin-stacked LED headlight. We also expect Suzuki to get rid of the dated semi-digital console and equip the V-Strom 700 with a TFT screen supporting smartphone connectivity and navigation.
While there’s no official word from Suzuki about it, the bike looks production-ready and it is possible that it could be unveiled at EICMA this year, post which, there’s a high chance of this bike coming to India. The V-Strom 650XT currently retails at Rs 8,88,030 (ex-showroom Delhi) and the V-Strom 700 is likely to carry a fairly substantial premium over it.
