The Tata Altroz Racer is the newest entrant in the hot hatchback segment, featuring not just cosmetic upgrades over the standard Altroz, but also gets a more powerful engine. The Altroz Racer’s only direct rival in the segment is the Hyundai i20 N Line, which was enjoying zero competition for a while now in the Indian car market. In this article, we will be comparing the entry-level variants of both these sporty hatchbacks.
Let’s get started with the prices:
Tata Altroz Racer R1 |
Hyundai i20 N Line N6 |
Price Difference |
Rs 9.49 lakh |
Rs 9.99 lakh |
Rs 50,000 |
With a difference of Rs 50,000, let’s find out what the two hatchbacks come packed with and if the extra money for the i20 N Line is worth it or not. A point to note is that the i20 N Line is also available with an automatic variant, which is priced at a premium of Rs 1.15 lakh.
The sportier iterations of the Tata Altroz and i20 are quite evidently sportier looking than the standard versions of both the cars. The i20 N Line sports red inserts on the bumper and side skirts that accentuate the sporty appeal. The Altroz Racer features white stripes which resonate with the “Racer” moniker.
Both the hot hatchbacks come with a dual-tip exhaust adding to the sporty quotient. But the i20 N Line looks more unique, courtesy of its bespoke wheels while the Altroz Racer gets a dark finish for the existing rims.
Let’s take a look at the dimensions:
Dimensions |

Length |

3995 mm |

1523 mm |
1505 mm |
Wheelbase |
2501 mm |
2580 mm |
Boot Space |
345 litres |
311 litres |
In the real world, there is not a lot separating the two in terms of outright size and the difference cannot be pointed out. However, if you compare the numbers, the i20 N Line is slightly longer and also has a longer wheelbase, while being wider. The Altroz Racer excels in offering a larger boot space and also stands out taller.
Being entry-level variants, both Altroz Racer and i20 N Line miss out on a couple of features here and there, but still offer plenty of useful features. Let’s find out what these features are and which hatch packs more equipment:

Entry-level variants of both the hatchacks are well-equipped and offer good comfort and convenience. The Altroz Racer is slightly more attractive here, due to the presence of a larger touchscreen infotainment system and more speakers on offer. But, the i20 N Line offers a tyre pressure monitoring system which is a very useful safety feature.

172 Nm |
The Altroz Racer gets the bigger engine here with a 1.2-litre unit compared to the 1-litre unit of the i20 N Line. There is hardly anything separating these two in terms of power figures. The Altroz Racer is offered with a manual gearbox only, while the i20 N Line comes with the option of a 7-speed dual clutch transmission with paddle shifters to take control of things manually.
Both the hatchbacks are interesting options if you are looking for something sporty and compact while catching a bit of attention on the road. Our pick here would be the Tata Altroz Racer, which is slightly better equipped and is also more affordable than the i20 N Line. However, you won’t go wrong with either of them as both these hatchbacks offer good value for the money and has enough potential to keep you smiling behind the wheel.
