Tata Motors has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra Government for setting up a vehicle scrappage plant in the state at the Conference on Investment Opportunities in Highway, Transport and Logistics in Mumbai, in the presence of Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
The proposed centre will be capable of scrapping around 35,000 vehicles a year. The latest development should help create more job opportunities, a sustainable environment, and possible improvement of new car sales in the state. This scrapping centre will be set up in association with a partner, which is yet to be announced.
Commenting on the latest development, the company’s Executive Director, Girish Wagh, said, “We are happy to partner with the Government of Maharashtra to support in setting up a scrapping facility in Maharashtra. Besides the well-known benefits that appropriate vehicle scrapping offers – boosting the setup of a circular economy, this initiative will also help in reiterating our commitment to strengthen our leadership in sustainable mobility space.”
Earlier this year, Tata Motors announced a new vehicle scrapping plant in Gujarat post the announcement of the Vehicle Scrapping Policy. Customers voluntarily scrapping their old vehicles in lieu of a new one will be eligible for discounts and road tax benefits from the government and vehicle manufacturer.
In related news, Mahindra has set up its own scrapping service called CERO, while Renault has tied up with the SUV giant for scrapping solutions under the name R.E.L.I.E.V.E.
