After breadcrumbing for quite some time, Tata Motors has finally unveiled its new entry-level SUV, the Punch, ahead of its launch this month. The micro SUV will be available in four trims: Pure, Adventure, Accomplished, and Creative. Bookings are underway for a token of Rs 21,000.
The Punch is 3,827mm long, 1,945mm wide, 1,615mm tall, gets 190mm ground clearance, and has a 2,445mm wheelbase, which is more than its closest rivals, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis and Mahindra KUV100 NXT. Now, to the design. The SUV has a high stance with body cladding all over to lend it a rugged demeanour. The split projector headlamps and DRLs are inspired by the Harrier, while the tri-arrow mesh on the air intakes are borrowed from the Nexon. The micro SUV gets 16-inch alloy wheels and doors that can open up to 90 degrees, making for easier entry and exit.
A total of seven body colours are on offer: Orcus White, Daytona Grey, Tropical Mist, Atomic Orange, Meteor Bronze, Tornado Blue, and Calypso Red. The last two come with a contrasting dual-tone roof.
The Punch is loaded to the gills. It gets the Altroz’s 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, semi-digital instrument cluster with a 7-inch screen, gear lever, and flat-bottom steering wheel. Other features include automatic climate control, cooled glovebox, steering-mounted controls with voice commands, a Harman audio system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, i-RA connected car tech, adjustable driver’s seat, auto headlamps and wipers, keyless entry with push-button start/stop, and cruise control.
Safety kit comprises dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX anchorage, cornering control, and rear parking sensors with a camera.
Powering the Punch is a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine making 86PS and 113Nm, paired with 5-speed manual and AMT options. The micro SUV gets two drive modes (Eco and City) and the off-roading-aiding Terrain Pro Management (only for the AMT).
Speaking of off-road aids, the Punch gets a 37.6-degree departure angle, 20.3-degree approach angle, 22.2-degree ramp-over angle, and a 370mm water wading capacity.
Tata Motors is also offering each of the four Punch trims optional add-ons. The carmaker will launch the SUV later this month at around Rs 5.50 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), which also puts it up against the Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.
