Tata Motors will soon step up its CNG game, currently enjoyed by Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, with the Tigor and Tiago CNG. Unofficial bookings for both models are underway at select dealerships ahead of its expected launch in January 2022.

Both models will get the 86PS 1.2-litre petrol engine, albeit in a detuned state when running on CNG. To keep costs in check, they are likely to be offered only with the 5-speed manual transmission. Like its rivals, the Tiago and Tigor CNG could get shift-on-the-fly functionality for switching between petrol and CNG.

Tata could limit the CNG variants to the mid-spec variants and they could miss out on some niceties like a touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, and push-button start that are offered in the top-spec trim.

That said, basics should be covered by a 2-DIN infotainment system, steering mounted audio controls, manual AC, power windows, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors.

The upcoming CNG Tatas are likely to command a premium of around Rs 90,000 over the respective petrol variant. Currently, the Tiago is priced from Rs 5 lakh while the Tigor starts from Rs 5.68 lakh (ex-showroom pan India). The former will lock horns with the Grand i10 Nios CNG and upcoming Celerio CNG, while the latter will square off against the Aura CNG
