The SUV gets spied from the top for the first time, revealing a possible removable hard plastic panel

  • 5-door Thar to get multiple roof options including metal hard top and removable composite hard top.

  • Soft top with a convertible roof is not expected for the elongated Thar.

  • Minor styling revisions and feature updates expected for the more practical off-roader.

  • Could get re-tuned versions of the standard Thar’s 2-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines.

  • Possible launch by early 2023.

Mahindra continues to put testing miles on the 5-door Thar, and we keep getting spy shots of the SUV, giving us more information about it ahead of its imminent debut. This time, the spied images reveal a possible hard composite roof with a removable panel for the rear passengers.

Wind in your hair

Given that the standard Thar gets multiple roof options, the 5-door Thar should also get that choice. And it becomes all the more evident with the top view of the SUV that reveals a large crease on the roofline, hinting towards a section for removing the hard plastic roof at the rear– just like the standard SUV. This should offer the partially open-top experience as expected from an adventure lifestyle vehicle like the Thar.

Also, a sunroof-like section for the front passengers could be opened up when the composite roof is removed entirely. Although, it's a hassle to do so as it isn’t an intended feature by Mahindra, and the soft-top option could get entirely chucked for the 5-door iteration.

Previous teasers showed an all-metal roofline, so multiple roof options should be available. Other known changes that have surfaced courtesy of spy shots include the distinct set of five-spoke wheels, sleeker side steps, and squared out wheel arches compared to the circular ones on the standard SUV.

The 5-door Thar will borrow its engines from the standard Thar, which gets a 150PS, 2-litre petrol and a 130PS, 2.2-litre diesel unit, although a different tune might be on the cards considering the larger proportions.

Transmission options should include a standard six-speed manual and an optional automatic gearbox, which will deliver the power to all four-wheels. Off-roading capabilities will be backed up by a low-range transfer case, locking differentials, and a design suited for conquering difficult terrains.

The bigger Thar will come at a steeper price tag in comparison to the smaller three-door model which is priced from Rs 13.59 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards. The former will rival the upcoming Force Gurkha 5-door and Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door.
