The Mahindra Thar SUV has achieved a big milestone: it has hit the one lakh production milestone since deliveries began in November 2020. It has taken the Thar a bit under two and a half years to achieve this target, but it’s a well-deserved one indeed. The milestone model that rolled out from the assembly line sees the SUV finished in its brand new colour, Everest White.
It’s no doubt that the Mahindra Thar’s incredible success comes from the fact that it’s a hugely desirable vehicle to own, despite the fact that it ain’t the most practical one for daily usage. The SUV marque made sure that with the second-generation model, the SUV becomes capable not only on broken terrain, but relatively comfortable to drive it in town too.
The list doesn’t end there. It also got more powertrain combinations, including a petrol engine, which wasn’t offered with the previous-generation model. To make life easier behind the wheel, the SUV marque also gave it an automatic transmission, making life a breeze while whizzing through city traffic. Very recently, Mahindra also introduced more affordable two-wheel-drive variants, serving the purpose for people who want to get the experience of owning a Jeep without taking it off road.

As for the features list, the Thar gets all the equipment one would need in their daily life. Highlights include a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, manual air-conditioning, power windows, cruise control and remote locking. Safety is taken care of by dual airbags, roll cage and electronic stability control. Plus, it’s reassuring to know that the SUV has achieved a four-star safety rating by Global NCAP.
That said, the Thar has its downsides. Accessing the rear seats needs some gymnastics due to the lack of rear doors. Plus, the ride quality and handling, though an improvement over its successor, are still not polished. And the boot space is best for soft bags or small weekend luggage.
At the end of the day, though, these are minor negatives as they are overshadowed by the fact that the Thar is now an impressive overall package. Soon, the SUV will face competition from the Maruti Suzuki Jimny. But Mahindra is soon preparing an answer for that: the five-door Thar, expected to be revealed in 2024.
