In contrast to the previous reports suggesting a debut in 2023, Mahindra’s executive director has confirmed the Thar 5-door for 2024

  • Mahindra Thar 5-door confirmed for 2024.

  • Mahindra’s Executive Director, Rajesh Jejurikar confirmed at FY23 financial results

  • Has been spied on test on multiple occasions.

  • Could get re-tuned iterations of the standard Thar’s 2-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel units.

Looks like Mahindra won’t be stealing the thunder of the Maruti Jimny, which is just on the verge of a launch, by revealing its longer, 5-door iteration of the Thar in 2023. Mahindra’s Executive Director, Rajesh Jejurikar confirmed at the carmaker’s FY23 financial results that the Thar 5-door will actually arrive in 2024, in opposition to the reports suggesting an arrival in 2023 itself.

Status check

The testing phase of the Thar 5-door is in full swing as suggested by spied images which keep popping up as test mules get papped perpetually while completing their designated kms. And each spy shot discloses something new every time like revealing the C-pillar-mounted rear door handles, or its suspension setup, or its possible removable hard top roof panel. You get the gist.

Powertrains

The 5-door Thar is likely to use the same 2-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines found in standard Thar, but they could be offered in a different state of tune, considering the engine will have more weight to chug around. The power outputs in the standard Thar are 130PS/300Nm and 150PS/320Nm for the diesel and petrol, respectively. Transmission options should include both six-speed manual and automatic options, for both the engines.

The RWD Thar also gets a smaller 118PS/300Nm 1.5-litre diesel unit, but no confirmation on whether this unit will be offered in the longer-wheelbase version or not. That said, there will be a rear-wheel drivetrain which will be sold alongside the four-wheel drivetrain, giving you added choice.

On the features front, both the longer wheelbase model should pack the same equipment as the existing model with features such as power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs, cruise control, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an MID, multiple airbags, stability control and rear parking sensors. However, a bigger eight-inch touchscreen system from the Scorpio N could make its way in place of the 7-inch unit and dual-zone climate control could also be offered.

Its safety kit should include six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, hill hold assist and rear parking sensors.

The Mahindra Thar 5-door’s arrival is being awaited dearly by people who want the off-roading prowess of the Thar with an added dose of practicality. It won’t be a fitting rival to the Maruti Jimny, considering the Maruti is already smaller than the standard Thar, but it will be a rival to the Force Gurkha 5-door, which is also awaiting a launch.
