The Volkswagen Tiguan has finally dropped covers globally. Now in its third-generation avatar, the SUV is based on the brand’s latest iteration of the MQB Evo platform. As a result, there are significant styling revisions, both inside and outside, and even offers a rather wide spectrum of powertrain options. Here’s everything you need to know about it before it makes way to our shores.
The newest update brings fresh styling to the face of the Tiguan, which aren’t just for a better visual appeal. The LED headlights are connected by a slim glass-covered strip, while the bumper is made of a blacked-out element flanked by radiator openings. VW claims that the new design has helped improve the drag coefficient which now stands at 0.28 Cd (previously it was 0.33 Cd).
The profile looks lengthier than before and that’s because it is. The Tiguan has gained around three centimeters in length, while it is more or less same on the other fronts and the gain in length is apparent from the side. A strong shoulder line defines the profile along with the alloy wheels which can be specced up to 20 inches.
The rear clearly draws parallels with VW’s global design language and looks similar to the Taigun we’ve seen closer to home with a similar black housing panel for the sleek connected LED taillights. The design signature within the unit looks detailed with the three piece elements, while the lower bumper too seems like a tweak given to the India-spec Taigun.

Thanks to the improved length of this new-generation VW Tiguan, it boasts a luggage stowage capacity of 652 litres.
The interior of the third-generation Tiguan has been revamped entirely with a rather chunky dashboard which is mainly dominated by the huge TV-like 15-inch infotainment touchscreen system. The central tunnel is clutter-free, thanks to the gear lever being placed with the wiper controls behind the steering wheel. As a result you have storage spaces in the middle, along with a knob with background lighting colours.
There’s a significant leap in the features list with the updates given to the third-gen VW Tiguan. Top features include a heads-up display, heating and massaging functions for the front seats, automatic climate control, and a fully digital driver’s display.

It also boasts a bunch of active safety features in the form of ADAS features which includes lane-keep assist, auto emergency braking, and parking assistance.
While Volkswagen is yet to divulge the exact specifications of the powertrains, the options for the new-generation Tiguan will abound. There will be a turbo-petrol, turbo-diesel, a mild-hybrid, and a plug-in hybrid powertrain options, paired with the dual-clutch automatic transmission (DSG). The latter will offer a claimed electric-only drive of up to 100km and will support both AC and DC fast charging.
The India-spec Tiguan is available with a single 190PS 2-litre turbo-petrol engine, mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drivetrain. Which one of these powertrain options will make way to India is yet to be seen, but don’t expect the diesel to be offered.

The third-generation VW Tiguan will start reaching international dealerships in the first quarter of 2024, so a launch in India should take place sometime after that. It will likely carry a steeper price tag and will continue to rival the likes of the Jeep Compass, Skoda Kodiaq, Citroen C5 Aircross and Hyundai Tucson.
