Nostalgia is a strong feeling which can evoke different emotions, not necessarily good ones. But when you have the heritage of something as rich as Formula 1, being nostalgic would be nothing short of a trip. A trip that’s unlike any other, one that immerses you in the world of Formula 1. No, this isn’t Netflix’s Drive To Survive, but a live exhibition that’s one of a kind, literally.
The world’s first Formula 1 exhibition, which was five years in the making, deep dives into the world of Formula 1 through its groundbreaking rooms – each one built for a purpose. It offers never-before-seen insights into the pinnacle of motorsports, with exclusive pictures, interviews, and whatnot! And while you might not be able to access this exhibition immediately, given that it is based in Madrid, Spain, we’ll take you through all the rooms step-by-step and try to immerse you in the experience in the best way possible. But before we begin, let this video set the mood for you:
Once Upon A Time In Formula 1
The title isn’t us being nostalgically dramatic, but it is actually the name of the first room. And as it suggests, this room takes you back in time with a gallery experience, which includes photographs, unseen artefacts and short documentaries featuring conversations of and interviews with the greatest personalities ever to grace the sport.
Design Lab
If you don’t know already, Formula 1 has a very competitive environment with each team trying to better the other, so the technological advances made are done so in a very secretive manner (emphasis on very here). But the design room within the exhibition lifts the curtain off this CIA-level classification and offers an insight into how different components are developed. This also includes the new-age hybrid powertrains, which power the current generation of F1.
Survival
the automobile community
Ever heard the phrase ‘survival of the fittest’? Okay, Formula 1 might not be an epitome of that phrase, but it definitely encapsulates survival of the toughest. And the sport hasn’t forgotten the horrific crash that Romain Grosjean suffered in his Hass back in 2020 during the Bahrain grand prix. That car, or we shall say, the remains of it are on display in this specific room, making sure that the strides that the sport has made in terms of safety aren’t overlooked and get the awe and attention they deserve.
Drivers & Duels
The sport would be nowhere if it wasn’t for the drivers and their duels that kept people strapped onto their seats for entertainment. This room, inspired by a race circuit, celebrates the most iconic drivers and legendary races in the history of the sport through interactive display walls and a unique collection of everything Formula 1, including historic mementos.
Revolution By Design
Evolution is for people who are scared of revolution. And Formula 1 has no place for monotony as reiterated by this room, which showcases how the design and tech transformed drastically through the years. This has been made in close collaboration with numerous F1 teams to make the experience as authentic as possible.
The Pit Wall
Who doesn’t love a light and sound show? This final room offers a six-minute accumulation of the seventy-three-year history of the motorsport. Think of it as a climax of the sport, tracing its roots from the times of Enzo Ferrari, passing through the current generation, and going all the way into the future and what lies ahead of us. Breathtaking? You bet.
