This list includes some of the most popular nameplates in India, from a compact Tata to a mighty Toyota people mover

In recent years, the auto industry has seen long strides in the improvement of safety and emissions regulations. Increasingly, carmakers are offering more eco-conscious choices to buyers, including CNG cars, hybrids and zero-emission hybrid vehicles.

EVs have been around for multiple decades in India, but their popularity reached new heights in 2022. Moreover, strong-hybrids emerged as a middle ground between conventional ICE (internal combustion) cars and fully electric vehicles.

Here are the ten most important cars that received electrified versions in India in 2022:

Tata Tiago EV

This compact hatchback is currently the most affordable electric car you can buy new in India. It’s offered in two battery sizes, 19.2kWh and 24kWh, with claimed range estimates of 250km and 315km, respectively. Moreover, the Tiago EV is the most affordable four-wheeler EV capable of DC fast charging, juicing up to 80 per cent in 57 minutes.

Mahindra XUV400 EV

The XUV400 EV will be launched in January as a Tata Nexon EV rival. It’s a tad longer than the sub-4m Tata EV and is claimed to offer a longer range of 456km. With a 150PS drivetrain, the XUV400 EV does 0-100kmph in a quick 8.3 seconds.

MG ZS EV

In a comprehensive update, MG gave the ZS EV a facelift, bringing the electric SUV closer to its ICE sibling, the Astor. It received a more powerful 176PS e-motor, paired with a larger, longer-range battery pack good for 461km of range (claimed). Unfortunately, although it does get select driver-assistance features, the ZS EV misses out on the Astor’s full suite of ADAS features.

BMW i4

Essentially, the BMW i4 is the all-electric version of the 4 Series sedan sold overseas. The 4 Series is also offered in India, but only as the M4 Competition performance sedan. The electric sedan is one of the longest-range EVs you can buy in India, capable of driving for up to 590km (WLTP) on a single full charge.

Honda City Hybrid

The Honda City Hybrid is currently the range-topping variant of the City sedan in India, and a deserving one at that. It has an efficient strong-hybrid powertrain that delivers an impressive claimed fuel efficiency of 26.5kmpl alongside the combined power of a 98PS IC engine and 109PS traction e-motor.

Toyota Innova Hycross

In its all-new avatar, the Innova Hycross draws power from a new 2-litre petrol engine that’s offered in ICE-only and strong-hybrid drivetrain options. The latter is not just more efficient and economical, but also the better equipped MPV. It gets luxurious features such as reclining captain seats, ventilated front seats and a panoramic sunroof.

Mercedes EQB

The EQB was launched alongside the GLB SUV, priced at a premium of around Rs 10 lakh over its ICE counterpart. The seven-seater EQB EV is imported as a completely built-up unit (CBU) and is available in a single fully-loaded EQB 300 AWD trim in India.

Citroen eC3

Citroen’s first EV for India is based on its mass-market hatchback, the C3. Called the eC3, the electric version will share its overall bodywork with the C3, but with EV-specific design cues and, likely, a longer list of features and equipment.

Toyota Hyryder

The Hyundai Creta-rivalling Hyryder was launched with a segment-first strong-hybrid system in 2022. It’s still the most affordable strong-hybrid vehicle you can buy in India, with a starting price of Rs 15.11 lakh for the strong-hybrid variant.

Maruti Grand Vitara

Maruti resurrected the Grand Vitara name for its new flagship SUV in India. The compact SUV shares its platform, powertrains and features with the Hyryder mentioned above, but gets completely different aesthetics and front and rear-end styling.
