The 250cc motorcycle segment has grown in popularity over the past couple of years, forcing manufacturers to fight for a piece of the action. The growing demand has also given birth to several genres in this segment, ranging from cruisers and streetfighters to adventure tourers.
While sales were healthy earlier last year, there has been a noticeable drop towards the fag end of 2022. Here are the top five bikes that dominated the 250cc segment last month.
The KTM siblings ruled the sales charts this month, registering over 980 unit-sales in December 2022 – 71 units more than in December 2021. That said, the numbers still aren’t that impressive considering the country was still under partial lockdown. The 250 Duke and 250 Adventure, priced at Rs 2.37 lakh and 2.44 lakh, respectively, are comparatively more affordable than their 373cc siblings. These bikes also received new colourways recently which may have contributed to the better sales figures.
The Bajaj Dominar 250 alone raked in 406 units last month, an impressive feat by any means, but a massive drop compared to December last year closing at 2,207 units. The Dominar 250 is a versatile machine, one that we are particularly fond of thanks to that sweet motor. Also, at Rs 1.75 lakh, it’s a lot more accessible while offering similar equipment you’d find on its 400cc sibling.
Suzuki’s V-Strom SX posted healthy sales of 291 units last month. While it’s based on the Gixxer 250 platform, Suzuki has made quite a few changes to make it more than just a slap-on job. You can get one for Rs 2.11 lakh. Interestingly, its 250cc siblings tallied just eight units, which is as much as the Hayabusa!
The oldest bike here, the Bajaj Avenger Cruise 220, is still managing to survive amongst stiff competition and Bajaj sold 270 units of the motorcycle last month. The bike received its last substantial update back in 2018, but still remains popular amongst the masses thanks to an accessible price point of Rs 1.38 lakh, making it the second-most affordable cruiser in India after the Avenger 160 Street.
The Pulsar 250 twins haven’t really made a mark by themselves just yet. While Bajaj sold over 2,600 models in December 2021, it only sold 245 last month – a substantial drop. Updating the bikes with modern features such as turn-by-turn navigation could help boost sales. Nevertheless, the company may see positive growth during the New Year and hopefully reel in better numbers.
