The Toyota Innova Hycross shed its covers recently and the MPV is more premium and upmarket than the Crysta. With its increased opulence quotient, the new Innova takes on more premium rivals than before, and one of them is the Kia Carnival. Let’s take a look at how the Innova Hycross’ specs stack up against the spec sheet of the Kia Carnival:

There’s no denying that the Kia Carnival is a bigger car. It's clear in the photos and becomes all the more evident with the numbers. The only aspect where Toyota trumps the Kia is with its height and even still, the margin isn’t huge. Even though the new generation Innova has grown in size, the wheelbase and the length of the Carnival are remarkably larger, and the MPV is also 135mm wider than the Toyota.
In terms of design, the overall silhouette of the Carnival is much more van/MPV-like with its stretched-out rear end. In comparison, the Innova Hycross’ design is beefier and even though it still has the demeanor of an MPV, the styling and stance does tilt towards an SUV. Irrespective of their body characteristics, both look premium and upmarket.
The cabin of the Toyota Innova Hycross looks more modern against that of the Carnival. Probably because of the fact that the same generation of the MPV has been on sale here for over two years now and is starting to show its age a bit. Don’t get us wrong here, the Carnival’s cabin is no compromise, rather, it just goes to show how far the Innova has come.
The cabin of the Carnival is wider than the Innova and the passengers will find quite some distance between them in the Kia. Both get soft-touch materials for the dashboard, but the layout of the Toyota looks much premium and ergonomic.
While the Carnival can be had in only a seven-seater configuration, the Innova Hycross can be had with either seven- or eight-seater layouts. The seven seater layout in both MPVs are offered with captain seats and while they have Ottoman seats, the Hycross’ middle row is powered, making it a tad bit easier to find the perfect seating position. In the Carnival, you have to rely on manual control.

The creature comforts on offer in both MPVs are pretty evenly matched. There is some equipment that’s offered on the Innova Hycross but is missing in the Carnival and some features offered on the Carnival are not present in the Innova Hycross.
As we said, pretty evenly matched. Features like a panoramic sunroof (it rather gets dual single-pane units) and ambient lighting are missing on the Carnival, while the Innova misses out on rear seat screens, and an air purifier. Overall, both MPVs are loaded to the gills with equipment and even offer leg rests for the rear passengers. One wouldn’t find them lacking.

Both MPS are equally matched in terms of their safety quotient. The only ace up Hycross’ sleeve is the suite of ADAS which is also a first for Toyota in India.

The new Innova Hycross has ditched its diesel powertrain for a petrol hybrid and a non-hybrid petrol powertrain. On the other hand, the Carnival gets a conventional oil burner paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. In fact, Carnival’s diesel engine puts out better numbers than the Hycross.
The petrol hybrid powertrain gets a better-claimed 21.1kmpl fuel economy than the Carnival’s 13.9kmpl ARAI-tested fuel efficiency. Mileage figures for Innova’s petrol powertrain are yet to be released. The MPVs are automatic only and you can’t have these vehicles with a manual ‘box.
Toyota hasn’t released the price list for the new Toyota Innova Hycross, but we expect it to cost somewhere between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom). These are just speculative prices, but if correct, it would slot just below the Carnival, which ranges between Rs 30.99 lakh and Rs 35.49 lakh (ex-showroom).
Both MPVs pull ahead in different fields and it all comes down to what’s a priority for you. All-out space and the sense of airiness are more evident in the Carnival, but the Hycross offers a more modern and premium feel inside. Pricing will play an instrumental role in pitching the Hycross against the Carnival, so stay tuned to Zigwheels for that information.
