The Toyota Taisor and Mahindra XUV 3XO are two of the latest offerings in the sub-4m SUV segment. While the former is a rebadged avatar of the Maruti Fronx, the latter is a facelift of the XUV300. Given that both the cars get turbo-petrol engines, we found it only natural to pitch them against one another to find out their real-world performance. Here’s a quick spec check before you place your bets:

On paper, things look entirely in the favour of the Mahindra 3XO, which boasts a bigger displacement and, as a result, a higher output. Both cars get manual transmissions along with the option of a torque converter automatic.
Note: The 3XO is also available in a detuned turbo-petrol engine, which puts out 112 PS/200 Nm. But we have only tested the more powerful TGDi engine and that’s what we’re considering for this test.

In contrast to what the on-paper specs suggested, the Toyota Taisor takes the win in the acceleration test. The difference is marginal with just .23s between the two, and it further drops down to just 5 hundreds of a second in the quarter mile test. The largest disparity is between the 20-80kmph kickdown test, where the Taisor wins again, but this time with a margin of .87s.
Considering the 3XO’s superior output figures, it is likely that it would have overtaken the Taisor if the test continued beyond the quarter mile. But nobody will be doing those speeds on our roads (at least legally), and it is the Taisor who’s quicker in reaching speeds we might do on our regular commutes.

In the braking test however, the 3XO stops early, courtesy of its four disk brakes and wider tyres. The Taisor, even in its top-spec guise, only gets disk brakes at the front.

Price (ex-showroom) |
Rs 7.49 lakh to Rs 15.49 lakh |
Rs 7.73 lakh to Rs 13.03 lakh |
While the Taisor might be quicker than the 3XO, it’s the more affordable of the two. The price premium can be pinned down to the fact that the 3XO gets the option of a diesel engine along with segment-first features. So the XUV 3XO’s price, which ranges between Rs 7.49 lakh and Rs 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom), puts it on par with rivals like the Tata Nexon and Kia Sonet. The Taisor on the other hand retails from Rs 7.73 lakh to Rs 13.03 lakh (ex-showroom). It takes on the aforementioned offerings, along with the Maruti Fronx, Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger and Hyundai Venue.
