Toyota has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government and announced its plans to explore the potential of setting up a green field manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, also called Aurangabad. 

The decision to do so is backed by Toyota’s expanding product portfolio in India, and the company is considering a significant investment that will further strengthen the company's focus on advanced green technologies, products and services. Once finalized, it is expected to be made over a multi-year period, potentially contributing to substantial job creation and economic growth in the region.

Mr. Masakazu Yoshimura, who is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Regional CEO at Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) said “Toyota Motor Corporation believes that India is well positioned to become a global manufacturing hub for cleaner and greener mobility solutions. This belief was reinforced with the recent regional restructuring which elevated India to play a central role by being integrated into the Middle East, East Asia & Oceania Region and acting as the hub of the new “India, Middle East, East Asia & Oceania Region”.

Toyota already has two plants in Bidadi, Karnataka with an annual installed capacity of 3.42 lakh vehicles per year, employing over 6000 people. In 2023, Toyota signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Karnataka government to open a third plant in the state of Karnataka. The opening of the third plant in Bidadi is scheduled for 2026 and Rs 3,300 crores will be invested in it. The new plant will increase the production capacity by 1,00,000 units and enable job openings for 2000 employees.

Toyota sells the Glanza, Rumion, Urban Cruiser Taisor and the Hyryder that are essentially rebadged Maruti Suzuki vehicles. It also manufactures its own range of cars in India, including the Fortuner, Innova HyCross, Innova Crysta, Fortuner Legender, Camry and Hilux. The only vehicles that are brought in as CBUs are the Vellfire and the Land Cruiser 300.
