Toyota has re-entered the sub-4 metre SUV segment with its Maruti Fronx-based counterpart named the Urban Cruiser Taisor at Rs 7.74 lakh (ex-showroom) with bookings commencing at Rs 21,000. It is available in five broad trim levels namely E, S, S+, G, and V. In this article we discuss in detail about everything you’ll get and miss out on, if you choose the base E variant.
On viewing head-on, the base E variant misses out on LED DRLs and turn indicators and gets a conventional halogen setup. Even the headlights here are halogen projectors and not full LEDs like on higher variants.
Coming to the side, the base E variant’s most prominent miss are the alloy wheels, as it gets 16-inch steel rims with wheel covers. The ORVMs and door handles are not body coloured and rather finished in black. The turn indicators are located on the front fenders instead of the ORVMs. It also misses out on UV-cut window glasses.
At the back, the base variant retains the roof-end spoiler, shark-fin antenna, and rear defogger, but misses out on rear wiper and washer. Also, the central bit in the connected LED tail lamps is not lit.
You do get wheel arch, side door and underbody cladding, though. While the looks have been altered according to Toyota’s design philosophy, the overall underpinnings and other bits remain very similar to that of the Fronx.
The interior dash layout is identical to the Suzuki Fronx with dual-tone colour scheme, but this being the base model obviously misses out on a lot of features, the biggest being the infotainment system, speakers and steering-mounted controls. You do get a flat-bottom steering wheel but it isn't leather-wrapped. The door handles are finished in black instead of chrome which are found on the higher variants.
The ORVMs are not electrically adjustable and do not have auto-folding function. The IRVM does not get an auto-dimming function as well and has to be manually adjusted. Customers will get fabric upholstery in this variant and will have to opt for the parcel tray as an optional extra.
Another miss for the base variant are the rear AC vents and front centre armrest. The driver’s seat misses out on height adjustment but the rear seats do get a 60:40 split functionality.

Instead of the 6 airbags which are limited to the higher-spec trims, the base E variant just gets 2 frontal airbags. There is no 360 degree camera setup, but you do get rear parking sensors with infographics shown on the MID. The Taisor comes standard with ABS, EBD, 3-point seatbelts for all occupants, and seat-belt reminders as well. Vehicle Stability control, Hill hold assist, and ISOFIX child seat mounts are standard across the range.
From the base variant itself, the Taisor gets an automatic climate control unit. You do get remote central locking as standard, but no push-button start/stop functionality for the base variants. The steering column can be adjusted just for rake and not for reach. The base variant also misses out on a wireless phone charger and front footwell lights. Since there is no automatic transmission on offer, it misses out on paddle shifters and for the base variant, you even miss out on cruise control. Since there isn't any infotainment screen, the base variant does not get any connected car tech features.

The base E variant is offered with just one engine option. A 1.2 litre K-series dual jet naturally aspirated engine which is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. There is no option of an automatic transmission, but customers can opt for a CNG variant in this trim level only. The 1.2 litre petrol engine produces 90 PS and 113 Nm while the CNG produces 77 PS and 98 Nm.
The base E petrol variant is priced at Rs 7.74 lakh (ex-showroom). If you wish to opt for the CNG variant, you’ll have to pay an additional Rs 98,000, as the CNG variant retails at Rs 8.72 lakh (ex-showroom).
Apart from giving competition to its Maruti counterpart (the Fronx), the Urban Cruiser Taisor will also rival sub-4 metre SUVs such as the Maruti Brezza, Mahindra XUV300, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Nissan Magnite, and Renault Kiger.
