Yamaha has officially teased the Yamaha R9. The bike will be unveiled globally on the 9th of October.

The R9 has been teased by official Yamaha accounts on Instagram. While there is no clear image of the motorcycle yet, there are many clues in the teaser video. For starters, the reel kicks off with a rider gearing up into full-gauntlet gloves which is a clear indication that it is a sport bike. The next shot is a quick glimpse of the LED DRL and projector headlamps. With these cues, we can expect the styling of the fairing to be similar to the R7

The R9 will be based on the MT-09 and make use of the potent, 888cc, triple-cylinder engine. The latest generation of the MT-09 puts out 119PS and 93Nm of peak torque. Considering this is a supersport, we can expect power figures to be slightly bumped up. Although, for now, no detailed specifications are out.

Towards the end of the teaser video, the rider is doing a burnout and we spot the swingarm which is similar to the MT-09. The wheels though, appear to be taken from the R6. The final cue is in the ‘9’ which appears at the end of the video as the rear tyre is creating smoke clouds. 9th of October is when Yamaha will globally unveil the bike.

Once unveiled, The R9 will be positioned between the R1 and the R7. There could also be a track-focused variant called the R9M unveiled alongside. Recently Yamaha unveiled the 2025 R1 range which is only road-legal in the US. With how fun of a motorcycle the MT-09 is - you can read our first ride review here, many enthusiasts have been waiting to get their hands on the R9 so it is great news that it is finally set to be released.

As for India, we have no official word from Yamaha currently, but we expect them to launch the R7 and MT-07 in the near future. We hope that the MT-09 and R9 are able to make their way to India as well.
