Yamaha filed trademarks for RZ250 and RZ350 in Japan in April 2023. For the uninitiated, the RZ was the final evolution of the legendary RD350 which, even today, has a cult following in India.
The trademarks have been filed for the names, and not for the logo. However, these have been filed under class 12 which includes Motors and engines for land vehicles, and even parts of automobiles among many other things. With almost no information other than the names themselves, it is hard to zero-in on what Yamaha’s plan is.
This is not the first Yamaha that could possibly make a comeback. The Japanese company has already confirmed that its another legend from the 90s’ – the RX100 too is slated to be resurrected soon. Check out our exclusive story for all the details.
The chances of the RD350 making a comeback with a two-stroke engine are slim and the easiest way would be using the Yamaha MT-03’s 321cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin motor. This makes 42PS and 29.7Nm which is a healthy upgrade from the RD350’s 31PS and 32.3Nm. Packaging the MT-03’s mill in a retro-styled bike would make this a tempting proposition.
But it's still quite long before the new Yamaha RZ350 or the RD350 see the light of the day. However, the Yamaha MT-03 will soon be gracing Indian shores.
