This is the same car that broke the same record back in 2019 and has now done so again without any mechanical revisions. So what’s the deal?

  • Koenigsegg Regera clocked 0-400-0kmph in 28.81.

  • This is a new world record for a production vehicle.

  • It beat the Rimac Never by 1.12 seconds.

  • No mechanical changes were made, only a new set of Michelin Cup2R tires and smoother track.

Just about a month ago, the Rimac Nevera shattered a total of 23 performance records in a single run, including the record for the quickest 0-400-0kmph time. The latter was achieved by besting the time set by the Koenigsegg Regera back in 2019. But it seems like Koenigsegg takes the Regera name a little too seriously. It means ‘to reign’ and so it does as the carmaker tested the Regera once again and bested not only its own previous time but also the latest record set by the Rimac Nevera.

Yes, with a time of 28.81 seconds, the Koenigsegg Regera has retained its pedestal at the front for the fastest 0-400-0kmph time. The best part is that the carmaker hasn’t made any mechanical changes or tuned the engine for more performance, so it is the same vehicle that set the record back in 2019. But how did they manage to shave off those crucial seconds this time around?

The answer lies in a new set of Michelin Cup2R tires and a smoother track surface compared to previous track. This makes the feat even more commendable and goes to show the level of engineering bestowed within the Regera that a 10 year old product is beating a future-proof all-electric powertrain –  a fairy tale doesn’t get any better.

Although the Regera makes use of a 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, there is nothing oldschool about its powertrain. That engine is paired to a hybrid powertrain, which combines together to produce up to 1500PS. All that power is sent to all its four wheels using a direct drive system instead of an orthodox gearbox.

In a world full of electric cars silently dominating the drag races, time charts and records, it is a nostalgic feeling to see the Regera dethrone the Rimac. It isn’t like we have something against EVs, but just that nostalgia is a strong emotion and the Regera just evoked it.
